How Was This Made?
In the sculptural technique known as direct carving, materials such as wood or stone are cut away to reveal a figure or design. As part of his working process, Zorach would select unusual stones or pieces of wood that often governed the subjects and forms of his sculptures. The artist could “see” a pair of reclining tigers in a pair of coarsely-grained and golden roughhewn planks. Using deep carving and bold chisel marks, Zorach brought each animal’s form and personality to life.
