A Lifetime of Inspiration
During this period in Corot’s career, he produced more than 150 small oil studies to help him master the elements of landscape composition and the effects of natural lighting. Corot never sold these studies, as he considered them “raw material for pictures.” He kept them throughout his lifetime for continued inspiration. After his death, they were auctioned in a large studio sale. Look for the stamp in the lower right corner that reads “Vent Corot” (Corot Sale.)
