Full removal of the layer of discolored, aged varnish is required to restore the depth and color to the painting, which has not been on view in decades due to its current condition. The varnish has gone flat and so cannot fully saturate the dark colors in the background. Having this work restored would add to the number of Spanish paintings – and the number of historical floral still lifes we can exhibit in our permanent collection galleries.
