10:30 am to 12:30 pm

Theme: Sweet Subtleties with Sculptor KeVon Dunbar

In this workshop, we invite participants to engage with works featured in our current exhibition The Bitter & the Sweet: Kentucky Sugar Chests, Enslavement, and the Transatlantic World 1790-1865. Learn how subtleties (elaborate sugar sculptures that began as lavish gifts exclusively for royalty) inspired artist Kara Walker to create “A Subtlety, or the Marvelous Sugar Baby”. Create your own small-scale sculpture using a similar process. Sculpting can often be intimidating, but thankfully we will be learning from one of the best! KeVon Dunbar is an emerging artist here in Louisville, whose conceptual sculptures delve into the many realms of the black experience. Join us as we discuss the historical symbolism of these art forms and their conceptual power all while learning simple sculpture methods. We encourage you to bring in any objects or photos that you would like to sculpt during this workshop.

“A subtlety represents this opportunity to make a figure that can embrace many themes, that is representative of power in and of itself.” -Kara Walker
