The Convalescent, 1904
Willard Metcalf (American, 1858-1925)
Oil on canvas
Gift of Mrs. Louis Seelbach 1928.4

ADOPTED

Reading in bed always requires good lighting. Unfortunately, over the decades, Marguerite Metcalf’s light has dimmed. There is a moderate layer of grime on the surface of the painting which needs to be entirely removed, along with the thin layer of low-gloss varnish. Once cleaned, a highly saturating varnish will be added to restore the sunlight effects and subtle variations in the pinks, yellows, blues, and greens. She will be a vision once more, as lovely as the day her husband painted her!
