ADOPTED

Recent conservation of this picture was made possible by a generous contribution from the Docent Corps of the Speed Art Museum through the Adopt-an-Artwork Program.

This feast for the senses is currently dulled by layers of disfiguring grime and old, discolored varnish, resulting in a near-complete lack of color saturation. There is a uniform effect of “grayness” across the entire painting, due to the aged varnish. In addition, there are small areas of paint loss, where the paint has flaked off the surface. These losses will be carefully filled and matched in a reversible process. The painting will then be secured properly in its frame. Major improvement in the appearance of this picture is anticipated with its restoration.
