SUBMISSION FORM

Submission Guidelines:

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Anything and everything that relates to your experience at The Speed! Art is not a one-way conversation—here at The Speed, we invite you to enter into a dialogue with the art in our collection by creating work that expresses your perspective on what you encounter during your visit. We want to celebrate the connections you make with and through art by providing a platform to share that connection with the whole community.

The work you submit can relate to the art you’ve seen, a program or event you’ve attended, interactions with others, or the museum space itself. Concrete or conceptual, specific or general—as long as you can justify how it relates to your experience at The Speed, we want to see it.

We only ask that what you submit is your original work and that NO part of your submission includes information that would lead to your identification (phone number, home address, etc.) or harmful imagery/messages that would compromise the safety of you or others.

HOW TO SUBMIT

We accept submissions only through our electronic submission system. We do not accept submissions through postal services or email. However, in your submission form you must provide an email address by which we can reliably contact you; this is how we will notify you of acceptance and communicate the details of the publication process. This can be your personal email or that of a parent/guardian or teacher so long as it is understood that we will be corresponding through that given email address.

(Note: if your work is accepted but we fail to receive a response from you, we cannot include your work in the publication.)

Submissions that are not accepted for publication will not be reconsidered unless resubmitted during the next submission cycle. You are welcome to submit multiple works for the same cycle using separate submission forms; each work will be considered individually. There are no fees associated with any part of the submission or publication process.

If you have difficulties with your submission form, you are welcome to contact us via email at charris@speedmuseum.org and we will assist to the best of our ability.

Please refer to specific medium guidelines for information on how to upload/format your submission.

PUBLICATION TIMELINE

We accept submissions all year around except during the month prior publication—the submission portal will close in the summer of 2020 but will reopen immediately following the issue’s release.

After you submit, we will send an email confirming we have received your submission, and from there your work will be officially in consideration for the upcoming issue. Regardless of when you submit, we will not send any notifications of acceptance until the month prior to that issue’s publication.

Artists whose work is accepted will receive a physical copy of the issue that features their work as well as a free family voucher to visit the museum, which will be distributed by mail in the week following the issue’s release. Issues of Reverse Speed will be viewed online at speedmuseum.org.

Visual Art Guidelines:
Please upload a single image that best represents the entirety of the work. Do not include detail images or multiple images in a single file. If you are submitting a work that is 3-D, choose a single image that communicates as much of the form of the work as possible, and if accepted, we may request additional images if we feel they are necessary.

Writing Guidelines:
Please upload all written submissions as a Word document. All text should be clear and legible—do not use an overly-stylized font or confusing text layout/spacing. There are no restrictions or requirements for the length of the work; however, accepted works must be of reasonable length to published in print and we take that into consideration during the review process.
Only one work will be reviewed per submission form. The entirety of the text in the document will be reviewed as a single work—do not include any commentary or additional text outside of what you intend to submit in the uploaded document. If you are hoping to submit multiple works, please fill out and submit a separate form.
(Note: all text, if accepted, will be formatted according to Reverse Speed’s design identity for publishing. If your work is dependent on a visual or formal element such as irregular spacing, distance between stanzas, etc., you must explicitly state so in your submission, and we will do our best to accommodate you.)

Audio Guidelines:
Please upload your work as savable file if possible. We will also accept links to your work uploaded to an external platform (Youtube, Soundcloud, etc.) if there is no disqualifying content associated with your work or the platform.
If accepted, audio submissions can only be included in full in online publication—the print publication may include some representation of the submission (lyrics, etc.) if possible.

Video Guidelines:
Please upload your work as savable file if possible. We will also accept links to your work uploaded to an external platform (Youtube, Vimeo, etc.) if there is no disqualifying content associated with your work or the platform.
If accepted, video submissions can only be included in full in online publication—the print publication may include some representation of the submission (frame stills, dialogue, etc.) if possible.
