Totally F***ed Up at Speed Cinema

October 13, 2023 at 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Totally F***ed Up
Directed by Gregg Araki

TICKETS

$12 | $8 Speed members

“This is a film where a bootleg Nine Inch Nails video is reason enough to betray another person’s affections.”—Fernando F. Croce, Slant Magazine

The first film in Gregg Araki’s Teenage Apocalypse Trilogy centers on six queer, alienated teenagers living in LA who form a makeshift family as they deal with the complications of love, money (or lack thereof), the AIDS crisis, and a homophobic society.

Made as a gay response to the John Hughes–style teen movie, this landmark of the New Queer Cinema radiates the raw energy, underground cool, and nihilistic abandon that would become Araki’s signature. 1993, U.S., 4K DCP, 78 minutes. Rated R.

Gregg Araki: The Teen Apocalypse Trilogy

Gregg Araki came of age during the emergence of punk rock, a cultural moment well-suited to his teenage angst. He attended USC film school in the early 1980s, where his student projects were inspired by new wave music, the DIY culture of underground art, and filmmakers such as David Lynch, Jim Jarmusch, and John Waters. Considered an integral part of the New Queer Cinema movement in part established at the 1992 Sundance Film Festival, Araki shaped a new, rebellious language for queer cinema.

Araki wrote and directed three features, which comprise his wildly influential Teen Apocalypse Trilogy, that would inspire an entire generation of outcasts, punks, and queer folks to embrace themselves.
