Lost and Found: Recovering the History of American Women in Paris
Speaker: Robyn Asleson, Curator of Prints & Drawings, Smithsonian, National Portrait Gallery
Many talented, independent-minded American women crossed the Atlantic during the first decades of the twentieth century to carry out transformative cultural work in Paris. Why do some of these women remain well-known today, while so many others have been forgotten? This presentation explores the divergent lives and afterlives of several unorthodox women who made their way to Paris—as well as the curatorial detective work that brought their portraits to light.
