2024 International Film Feature – Oscar nomination

“For Garrone, this proves an energizing shift in focus, yielding his most robust, purely satisfying filmmaking since his international breakthrough with Gomorrah 15 years ago.”—Guy Lodge, Variety

Talk Cinema is programmed by the esteemed film critic and film curator Harlan Jacobson featuring a sneak preview screening of an art-house film prior to its release followed by a discussion. Be the first to see the latest films and to share your impressions.  This month’s guest host will be Nathan Viner, Founder of Lamplighter Film Union.

This month’s selection, Io Capitano, has been nominated for an Oscar for Best International Film.  Writer-director Garrone presents a “reverse shot” of the immigration experience while unfurling an epic, cinematographically magnificent odyssey from West Africa to Italy. The story is told through vantage point and experiences of two Senegalese teenager living in Kakar who yearn for a brighter future in Europe. Between their dreams and reality lies a treacherous journey through a labyrinth of checkpoints, the scorched Saharan desert, a fetid North African prison, and the vast waters of the Mediterranean where thousands have died packed inside vessel barely fit for passage.

Winner of the Silver Lion for Best Director and the Best Promising Actor Award at the Venice Film Festival. 2023, Italy/Belgium/France, DCP, in Wolof and French with English subtitles, 121 minutes. Recommended for 16+
