April 30, 2023 at 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

April Community Day

1 – 4 pm, FREE

Join us for April Community Day, a day of celebrating and spreading hope.
The day will begin with a Sound Bath with Divine Healing and Restoration. Together we will recognize the Community Connections Exhibition Space for Belonging: I am Here led by Visual Storyteller T.A. Yero of Two Hearts Media. We are also excited to host the annual Poetry Derby. The day will be filled with artmaking, good vibes, and community.

1 – 4 pm: Art-making with Artist Sara Noori in the Art Sparks Classrooms

1:15 – 1:45 pm: Sound Bath with Divine Healing and Restoration in the Grand Hall

1:30 – 3:30 pm: Art-making with Creative Healing in the Atrium

– 3 pm: The Poetry Derby in the Grand Hall

Partners of the Poetry Derby are the University of Louisville English Department and Creative Writing Program and the Louisville Free Public Library.

The Poetry Derby is a celebration of language’s ability to allow us to connect, engage, express, and develop new understandings about who we are—and who we want to be—as individuals, community members, and part of the world more broadly. In response to Louisville native Emily Bingham’s recently published book My Old Kentucky Home: The Astonishing Life and Reckoning of an Iconic American Song, in which Bingham calls the state song “a sonic monument to a segregated memory” and implicitly asks us to imagine better, this year’s Poetry Derby theme is anthems for the 21st century. Winning poems will be read at the celebratory reading in the Grand Hall on April 30 from 2-3 p.m.

– 4 pm: Space for Belonging: I Am Here, reception in the Atrium
