This picture requires intervention in the conservation lab to remove two thick coats of varnish layers applied over more stable varnishes. These aging varnish layers have started to appear “granular,” which means it is time for a visit to a skilled conservator. All varnish layers added over the decades must be removed to improve the visual appearance of the painting – the process will also remove the layer of accumulated grime that has settled onto the surface. The result will be a modest brightening of the color palette in this picture, and a more even surface.
