ADOPTED

Recent conservation of this picture was made possible by a generous contribution from the Speed Art Museum’s Board of Governors through the Adopt-an-Artwork Program [2020]

This remarkable still-life would benefit from some gentle restoration. There is a prominent bulge in the lower left corner, which—while stable—suffers from small areas of insecurity and associated paint losses at the bulge site. Furthermore, a heavy, black grime layer coats the surface of the painting.

In the conservation lab, the canvas will be removed from the stretcher, and the bulge will be carefully humidified in order to relax the distortion. Flaking and losses will be consolidated and stabilized.

The dirt and grime layer will be removed from the entire surface of the painting, any losses will be carefully inpainted, and the canvas will be resecured in its frame.

This treatment will be transformative.
