Our hope is that we can return the appearance of this pretty little oil sketch to its original freshness and sense of vitality. Vedder painted it alla prima, working quickly on a portable easel set up at the edge of this Italian pathway, half shrouded in shadow. The blue of a sunny Roman sky is obscured by discoloring yellow varnish, and you can spot a small cleaning test performed by the conservator in the upper right corner; look how much brighter this work can be, with proper treatment! The frame will require some minimal touchups and ensure that any areas of flaking are loose gilding are secured.
