ADOPTED

Conservation of this artwork was made possible by a generous contribution from William and Frances Alden through the Adopt-an-Artwork program

The artist is experiencing a reassessment of his place in American art, and it would be great to be able to hang this picture in the galleries. The painting is unexhibitable in its current state. Small tests indicate that cleaning will be dramatic. The painting is unlined, surfaced with a thin layer of varnish which has badly discolored. A significant coat of grime covers the painting overall.

This is a straightforward treatment: we’ll remove the surface grime, the discolored varnish, and embedded dirt that is trapped underneath the varnish. We’ll then determine whether the painting requires a new coat of varnish, or if it could be left alone. Any losses of paint will be filled or inpainted as necessary.
