This amazing little onsite oil study (notice the pinholes at all four corners!) requires a full examination in the conservation laboratory to properly determine the course of treatment. We know that there is a moderate level of grime deposits on the surface. In the lower left quadrant, there is an area of dull, unusual texture, likely indicating an old tear repair or paint retouching that hasn’t held up over the decades. The grime and dirt will be removed from the surface, and the old repair in the lower left requires attention, in order to improve its appearance in relation to the rest of the painting. Finally, varnish will be added as necessary to maximize the color saturation and integrate the old damage.
The painting requires a new frame that is appropriate to the size and design of the composition—currently, the painting is “underframed”. If you are interested in helping us fund a new frame, please let us know!
