Elisha Raising the Shunammite’s Son, 1766
Benjamin West (American, 1738–1820)
Oil on canvas
Museum purchase from the Dr. George Angus Robertson Bequest 1964.7

ADOPTED

Oh, the drama! But it’s that much harder to see what’s happening with the moderate layer of surface grime and hazy varnish which coats the entire surface of the painting. As a result, darkened corners and shadows are virtually unreadable. It’s hard to believe that there is actually a window in this painting! The layer of grease, dirt and grime that lays atop the aged varnish will be removed, as will the old varnish, revealing West’s original paint surface (and colors). The painting will be revarnished to improve color saturation, resulting in significant improvement of the overall appearance of this painting.
