Playful Inlay
Birds, vines, leaves, moons, hearts, a pinwheel. The anonymous cabinetmaker of this corner cupboard used its expanses of wood as a canvas for his unique mix of motifs, all of which suggest he may have had a Germanic background. He also had a sense of humor: notice the inlaid hand pointing to a goblet and a decanter. Corner cupboards were indeed used to store objects like glassware, decanters, and other items for the table.
