“The embattled spirit of respect for human dignity and the need for mutual tolerance flow clearly through the film.”—Andrew Robinson, Sight & Sound

Winner of eight Oscars including Best Picture, the film celebrates the leadership of Mohandas K. Gandhi through nonviolent protest covering three major campaigns for freedom and equity.

In 1893, Gandhi was thrown off a South African train for being Indian and traveling in the first-class compartment.  Realizing that the laws were biased against Indians, he led a non-violent protest campaign for the rights of all Indians in South Africa.

After a successful campaign, Gandhi was invited back to India and urged to take up the fight for India’s independence from the British Empire. When he agrees, he’s supported by millions of Indians nationwide.

In addition, Gandhi addressed the religious tensions between Hindus and Muslims leading to Gandhi’s hunger strike. The Partition of India separating the peoples of different faiths in to separate areas was heart-breaking to Gandhi and he fought for peace.

Ben Kingsley won an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of Gandhi.  With John Gielgud, Candice Bergan, and a cast of thousands. 1982, U.K./India/U.S./South Africa, DCP, in English and Hindi with English subtitles, 188 minutes. Rated PG.
