Speed Cinema presents: Belladonna of Sadness (Kanashimi no Beradonna)

Directed by Eiichi Yamamoto

One of the great treasures of Japanese animation has been restored from the 35mm negative and is on release in the United States for the first time in this 4K restoration. Belladonna of Sadness is an erotic, mad, swirling, psychedelic film that appears equal parts J.R.R. Tolkien in its storytelling and Gustav Klimt in its explicit sexuality. The film unfolds as a series of stunning still watercolor paintings that bleed and twist together.

A story of revenge, an innocent young woman is violated by the local lord on her wedding night. Seeking retribution, she makes a pact with the devil who transforms her into a black-robed vision of madness and desire.  Recommended for adults only. 1973, Japan, DCP, in Japanese with English subtitles, 93 minutes.
