“A slow motion explosion of anti-authoritarian rage.” —Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times

Both an engrossing thriller and a sobering look at corruption and tyranny in politics, Manuscripts Don’t Burn chronicles a series of murders and disappearances instigated by the Iranian government in 1996. Agonizingly realistic, the film captures the cold-blooded nature of political violence in an unflinching and biting critique.

Due to its politically dangerous content, the film was released without a listing of cast or crew, aside from the director Mohammad Rasoulof (Iron Island, The White Meadows) who was previously imprisoned by the government for his defiant works. 2013, Iran, DCP, in Persian with English subtitles, 125 minutes. Recommended for 16+.

The Seventh Art Stand

The Seventh Art Stand is a nation-wide series of films presented by movie theaters and community centers across the U.S. as an act of cinematic solidarity against Islamophobia. In May 2017, screenings across the U.S. will showcase films from the countries affected by Islamophobia and the Muslim Ban. The Network of Arab Alternative Screens (NAAS) joins U.S. theaters in this coalitional effort to elevate the cinemas and stories of our friends and fellow filmmakers abroad. We believe it is crucial to build a tradition of sharing more stories, voices, and faces on our screens. Speed Cinema will be proudly participating in the Stand with two politically impactful films from Iran.
