“In sync with a singular musical artist . . . In tune with the haunting poetics of her work.”—Sheri Linden, The Hollywood Reporter

Blues and folk singer Karen Dalton was a prominent figure in the 1960s New York. Idolized by contemporaries like Bob Dylan and younger musicians like Nick Cave, Karen discarded the traditional trappings of success and led an unconventional life until her early death. This documentary honors the long-overlooked legacy and musical impact of the late musical legend, but savers her largely misunderstood story from near devastation.

Following a tragic fire in 2018, which destroyed all the remains of Dalton’s personal archive, directors Robert Yapkowitz and Richard Peete worked closely with her family and estate to capture the vanishing fragments of her life. From troves of newly unearthed material and raw footage to candid conversation with Dalton’s daughter Abralyn Baird and commentary by loved ones, ex-lovers, collaborators and close friends, the film serves as an essential portrait of her singular voice in indelible influence.

Featuring Karen Dalton, Nick Cave, Vanessa Carlton, and Lacy J. Dalton. A New York Times Critic’s Pick. 2020, U.S., DCP, 85 minutes. Recommended for 16+.
