For the 18th consecutive year, ShortsTV and Magnolia Pictures present the Oscar-Nominated Short Films, opening on Feb. 17th. With all three categories offered – Animated, Live Action and Documentary – this is your annual chance to predict the winners (and have the edge in your Oscar pool)! A perennial hit with audiences around the country and the world, don’t miss this year’s selection of shorts. The Academy Awards take place Sunday, March 12th.

ANIMATED SHORTS 

Estimated Running Time: 97 minutes.  Recommended for 18 + due to the sexual nature of the content.

The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse
Directed by Charlie Mackesy and Matthew Freud

This tale follows a boy, a mole, a fox, and a horse, as they create an unexpected friendship and travel together in the boy’s search for home. U.K, 32 minutes. 

The Flying Sailor
Directed by Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby

Inspired by true events, the highly anticipated new film is a meditation on a sailor’s unexpected voyage. Canada, 8 minutes.

Ice Merchants
Directed by João Gonzalez and Bruno Caetano

Every day, a father and his son jump with a parachute from their vertiginous cold house, attached to a cliff, to go to the village on the ground, far away where they sell the ice they produce daily. Portugal/France/U.K., 15 minutes.

An Ostrich Told Me the World is Fake and I Think I Believe It
Directed by Lachlan Pendragon

A young office worker uncovers the flaws in his stop-motion universe with the help of a mysterious talking ostrich.  Australia, 12 minutes.

My Year of Dicks
Directed by Sara Gunnarsdóttir and Pamela Ribon

This psychedelic and hilarious short is loosely based on Pamela Ribon’s experiences as a Houston teen trying to lose her virginity in the early 1990s. U.S., 26 minutes.

An Irish Goodbye
Directed by Tom Berkeley and Ross White

In rural Northern Ireland, a pair of estranged brothers reunite following their mother’s untimely death. U.K., 23 minutes.

Ivalu
Directed by Anders Walter and Rebecca Pruzan

Based on the Danish graphic novel, when Ivalu disappears, her little sister is desperate to find her. While her father does not care, the Greenlandic landscape holds secrets. Denmark, in Greenlandic with English subtitles. 17 minutes.

Le Pupille
Directed by Alice Rohrwacher

Follow the rebellious girls of a Catholic boarding school before Christmas, a time of war and scarcity. Italy, in Italian with English subtitles. 39 minutes.

Night Ride (Nattrikken)
Directed Eirik Tveiten and Gaute Lid Larssen

On a cold night in December, Ebba waits for the tram to go home after a party, but the ride takes an unexpected turn. Norway, in Norwegian with English subtitles. 16 minutes.

The Red Suitcase
Directed by Cyrus Neshvad

Late in the evening at the Luxembourg Airport, a veiled 16-year-old Iranian girl is frightened to take her red suitcase from baggage claim.  She keeps pushing back the moment to go through the arrival gate. Luxembourg, 18 minutes.

 

DOCUMENTARY SHORTS 

Running time: 166 minutes with one 10-minute intermission. Recommended for 16+.

The Elephant Whisperers
Directed by Kartiki Gonsalves and Guneet Monga

Bomman and Bellie, a couple in South India, devote their lives to caring for an orphaned baby elephant named Raghu, forging a family like no other that tests the barrier between the human and the animal world. India, in Tamil with English subtitles, 40 minutes.

Haulout
Directed by Evgenia Arbugaeva and Maxim Arbugaev

A man lives in a small wooden hut along the Siberian Artic awaiting the “haulout,” an annual event when walruses and other sea mammals emerge from the water to spend time resting on rocks, beaches, and ice.  Climate change abruptly affects this year’s event. U.K., 25 minutes.

How Do You Measure a Year?
Directed by Jay Rosenblatt

From the time she was two-years old and until she turned 18, they had a ritual: Dad asked (and filmed), and Ella answered. What do you dream about? What scares you? What do you think about our relationship? This is a little story about growing up and the love between father and daughter. U.S., 29 minutes.

The Martha Mitchell Effect
Directed by Anne Alvergue and Beth Levison

The outspoken Martha Elizabeth Beall Mitchell, the wife of John N. Mitchell, United States Attorney General under President Richard Nixon, criticized the administration during Watergate and Nixon’s supporters waged a campaign to gaslight her into silence. U.S., 40 minutes.

Stranger at the Gate

A U.S. Marine began to plot a terrorist attack on a small-town American mosque, but his plan takes an unexpected turn when he comes face-to-face with the people he sets out to kill. U.S., 29 minutes.
