Making Our Way Home: Stories From Louisville and Beyond

In hopes of capturing diverse perspectives and fostering understanding and connection across our community, the Speed Art Museum collaborated with artists from the Elder Program at Kentucky Refugee Ministries and Presentation Academy’s National Art Honor Society chapter to bring forth this exhibition, Making Our Way Home: Stories from Louisville and Beyond.

Kentucky Refugee Ministries, Inc., a non-profit organization, is dedicated to providing resettlement services to refugees through faith- and agency-based co-sponsorship in order to promote self-sufficiency and successful integration into our community. Presentation Academy, Kentucky Refugee Ministries’ partner in this project, strives to create a diverse community that promotes academic excellence and challenges young women to develop their greatest potential as leaders in a global society. Through a series of weekly printmaking sessions, the artists from both organizations created vivid, memorable works that reflect what home means to them.

While the idea of home is universal, our individual notions of home—as well as the places, colors, and objects that represent it—differ greatly from person to person. Each artist featured in this exhibition sought to discover and reveal: where they come from, where they live, and how to express it via their art-making process. The finished works tell stories that expand our understanding of our shared community.

This project made possible in part by generous donations from Kosair Charities and Christe and Randy Coe.

The Speed Art Museum would like to offer a special thank you to Rudy and Susanna of Calliope Arts, as well as Huber Décor, for their help with this project.
