SUMMARY:Ink at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Ink\nDirected by Danny Boyle \nFriday\, December 11\, 6 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members | Free for students with valid I.D. \n“Visually stimulating and highly enjoyable.”—David Rooney\, The Hollywood Reporter \nIn the late 1960s\, the millionaire Rupert Murdoch (Guy Pearce) and veteran newspaper editor Larry Lamb (Jack O’Connell) team up to hatch a wild plan: to challenge London’s leading newspaper with a brash new form of journalism. They hope to win comeuppance against the snobbish British aristocratic elite. \nAs Lamb reinvents Murdoch’s tabloid The Sun\, he becomes an attack dog\, devolving his newspaper into a sensationalistic\, sexually charged\, and right-leaning rag—and watches sales skyrocket. \nAcademy Award-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire\, 127 Hours) works from James Graham’s adaptation of his own hit play\, taking darkly exuberant comic delight in a wild underdog story with radically destructive results. Claire Foy plays the woman’s page editor Jules Davies\, and the trio’s superb performances\, along with Boyle’s inventive visual pastiche\, make Ink mesmerizing and gripping entertainment. 2026\, U.K./U.S./France\, DCP\, 116 minutes. Rated R.

SUMMARY:Nuisance Bear at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Nuisance BearDirected by Gabriela Osio Vanden and Jack Weisman \nFriday\, January 1\, 6 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members | Free for college students with valid I.D. \n“A grand fable\, masterfully told.”—Pat Mullen\, POV Magazine \nFor thousands of years\, polar bears have migrated along the shores of Hudson Bay in northern Canada. Today\, that ancient rhythm collides with a human world of tourism\, surveillance\, and control. Nuisance Bear immerses viewers in the experience of a polar bear forced to navigate tourists\, wildlife officers\, and hunters as climate change delays the freeze and pushes bears closer to human settlements. When a sacred predator is branded a “nuisance\,” it becomes unclear who truly belongs in this shared landscape. \nReturning to Churchill\, Manitoba—the self-styled “Polar Bear Capital of the World”—filmmakers Gabriela Osio Vanden and Jack Weisman expand their award-winning short into a feature guided by an Inuit narrator whose perspective resists simplification. Shot with striking intimacy and scale\, the film observes bears that are constantly monitored\, photographed\, and redirected. In tracing this uneasy coexistence\, Nuisance Bear becomes a meditation on how humans manage\, commodify\, and redefine wildlife—overturning the conventions of the nature documentary and reframing animals not as spectacle\, but as active agents in a rapidly changing world. 2026\, Canada/U.S./U.K.\, DCP\, in Inuktitut and English with English subtitles\, 88 minutes. Recommended for 12+. \nImage credit: Photo: Michael Code

SUMMARY:Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:New 4K Restoration: Speed Art Museum Centennial \nSunrise: A Song of Two HumansDirected by F. W. Murnau \nSunday\, January 3\, 3 pm CINEMA + | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members | Free for college students with valid I.D. \n“Extraordinarily sensual.”—Pauline Kael\, The New Yorker \nF. W. Murnau’s Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans is often\, and deservedly\, recognized as the supreme achievement of the silent era cinema—and of all the eras that followed. For nearly one hundred years\, critics\, historians\, scholars\, and film lovers have recognized its artistry\, emotion\, and technical brilliance. The film’s excellence was recognized for Unique and Artistic Production at the first Academy Award ceremony\, and the latest BFI Sight and Sound poll ranks Sunrise as #11 on its list of Greatest Films of All Time. \nThe great pioneer of German Expressionism (Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror\, The Last Laugh\, Faust)\, Murnau came to Hollywood in 1927 where William Fox provided budgetary and artistic carte blanche to create a cinematic masterpiece. Working with master cinematographers Charles Rosher and Karl Struss\, Murnau’s fluid tracking shots\, superimpositions\, and symbolic use of light helped redefine what film language could accomplish\, achieving a level of visual storytelling that required no dialogue to communicate its eternal themes of guilt\, forgiveness\, and renewal. With Sunrise’s centenary coinciding with that of the Speed Art Museum\, what better time to celebrate Murnau’s masterpiece with a renewal of its own. \nThe film has been restored by the San Francisco Film Preserve with archival footage from The Museum of Modern Art\, the British Film Institute\, and others. This extensive new restoration had its world premiere at the Il Cinema Ritrovato in Bologna\, Italy in June and U.S. premiere at MoMA in August. 1927\, U.S.\, 4K DCP\, 95 minutes. Recommended for 16+. \nCINEMA + with an introduction by Robert Byrne\, Board President of the San Francisco Film Preserve. \nImage credit: San Francisco Film Preserve

SUMMARY:Minotaur at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:MinotaurDirected by Andrey Zvyagintsev \nFriday\, January 8\, 6 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members | Free for college students with valid I.D. \n“Riveting. Sucks you in like a vortex.”—Ryan Lattanzio\, IndieWire \nThe latest from Oscar nominated writer-director Andrey Zvyagintsev (Loveless\, Leviathan)\, Cannes Grand Prix winner Minotaur is a twist-laden parable for our times. \nAmidst the comfortable trappings of affluence and domesticity\, a Russian corporate executive Gleb (Dmitriy Mazurov) finds himself under siege on all fronts. At home\, he is haunted by suspicions that his increasingly distant wife Galina (Iris Lebedeva) is unfaithful. At work\, he contends with a demand from local authorities to draft a quota of employees for the war in Ukraine. Desperate to keep his hands clean\, Gleb struggles to reassert control even as the collapse of his carefully ordered life seems fated to accelerate toward violence. \nA pressure cooker in cinematic form\, Minotaur uncovers and indicts the heart of societal darkness with searing clarity. Uniting intimately drawn performances and stark visual power\, France’s Best International Feature Film entry to the 99th Academy Award is peerless work from an indisputable master. 2026\, France/Germany/Latvia\, DCP\, in Russian with English subtitles\, 141 minutes.
