SUMMARY:Unzipped at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:New 4K Restoration\nUnzipped\nDirected by Douglas Keeve \nSaturday\, October 17\, 6 pm | BUY TICKETS \n“An insider’s view of the fashion world that’s hip\, light\, authentic\, revelatory\, and always amusing.”—Emanuel Levy\, Variety \nDesigner Isaac Mizrahi proved a force of nature on the road to his legendary fall 1994 collection\, a career-defining triumph that was documented with an effervescent intimacy by Douglas Keeve\, Mizrahi’s then-partner. Both a time capsule of the buoyant\, raucous 1990s\, when pop culture and high art became interchangeable\, and a vérité-style\, in-the-trenches report on the daily agonies and ecstasies of the creative process\, this seminal artistic portrait—sumptuously shot by Ellen Kuras and Robert Leacock—transcends glitz and glamour to offer an extraordinary view of the charisma and force of will inherent to genius\, as well as its personal costs. 1995\, U.S.\, 4K DCP\, 73 minutes. \nDigitally restored by the Sundance Institute and UCLA Film & Television Archive. Funding provided by Isaac Mizrahi Entertainment. Laboratory services by Roundabout Entertainment\, Inc. and Deluxe Media Audio Services.

SUMMARY:You Had to Be There at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Music + Film \nYou Had to Be There:\nHow the Toronto Godspell Ignited the Comedy Revolution\, Spread Love & Overalls\, and Created a Community That Changed the World (In a Canadian Kind of Way)\nDirected by Nick Davis \nWednesday\, October 21\, 7 pm CINEMA + | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed and LPM members | Free for students with valid I.D. \n“Exuberant and essential.”—Variety \nThis movie is a blast\, telling the story of how a cast of unknown comedians in 1972 Toronto\, including Martin Short\, Gilda Radner\, Eugene Levy\, Andrea Martin\, Dave Thomas\, and Victor Garber\, put on a production of Godspell that laid the groundwork for modern comedy. Paul Shaffer was even the musical director of the production. \nAll surviving cast members of the 1972 show appear in the film\, which is a delightful time at the movies chronicling the birth of the next generation of comic superstars. The film recounts a pivotal moment in comedy history in hilarious\, moving\, and inspiring detail. Executive produced by Judd Apatow. A selection of the Toronto International Film Festival. 2025\, Canada/U.S.\, DCP\, 98 minutes. Recommended for 15+. \nCINEMA + with a post-screening discussion by the film’s editor Doug Abel who is from Louisville. \nCo-presented with WFPK

SUMMARY:Possible Love (Ganeunghan sarang) at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Possible Love (Ganeunghan sarang)\nDirected by Lee Chang-dong \nFriday\, October 23\, 6 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members | Free for students with valid I.D. \n“Sharply observed\, bitingly political.”—Manohla Dargis\, New York Times \nAward-winning filmmaker Lee Chang-dong’s (Burning) heavily anticipated new film is a tale of deep yearning\, envy\, and grief. Every couple wants to find some sense of happiness. \nFor Ho-seok and Mi-ok the hope is to move on from the trauma caused by the disastrous outcome of a labor dispute. When they approached by young\, ambitious documentary filmmaker Ye-ji to take part in her latest project\, they become intimately intertwined with her and her business mogul husband Sand-woo. \nRevelation of interpersonal suffering come to light—both in front of and behind the camera—as the documentary develops\, and tensions between the couples start to rise. Questions are asked as to who gets to tell whose story\, who speaks for whom\, and what responsibilities observers have when taking on the perspective of the disenfranchised. As the lives of filmmaker and subjects become increasingly entangled\, tensions mount. \nThrough purposeful and layered storytelling\, Possible Love quietly surfaces themes of social class and power. Winner of the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival and South Korea’s submission for consideration for the Best International Film Oscar. 2026\, South Korea\, DCP\, in Korean and English with English subtitles\, 164 minutes. Rated R.

SUMMARY:Possible Love (Ganeunghan sarang) at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Possible Love (Ganeunghan sarang)\nDirected by Lee Chang-dong \nSunday\, October 25\, 3 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members | Free for students with valid I.D. Rated R.

SUMMARY:Begotten at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:New 4K Restoration \nBegotten\nDirected by E. Elias Merhige \nWednesday\, October 28\, 6 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members | Free for students with valid I.D. \n“One of the most important films of modern times.”—Susan Sontag \nBegotten has no characters in the ordinary sense. Its final credits name three principal figures: \nGod Killing Himself. \nMother Earth. \nSon of Earth — Flesh on Bone \nThe entire film is what those names do to each other and to the earth. God Killing Himself tears open his body and dies. Mother Earth rises from what remains and takes his seed into herself. She gives birth to Son of Earth — Flesh on Bone. He is cast into a barren world\, seized by the Nomads\, tortured\, killed\, and briefly returned to life by his mother. The Nomads destroy her too. The Robed Figures gather what remains of mother and son\, grind their bodies down\, and return them to the soil. The ground flowers. 1989\, U.S.\, 4K DCP\, 72 minutes. Recommended for 17+.

Featuring colorfully surreal sets and luminous cinematography\, these haunting tales of demonic comeuppance and spiritual trials\, adapted from writer Lafcadio Hearn’s collections of Japanese folklore\, are existentially frightening and meticulously crafted. 1968\, Japan\, 4K DCP\, in Japanese with English subtitles\, 183 minutes. SUMMARY:Fatherland at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Fatherland\nDirected by Paweł Pawlikoski \nFriday\, November 6\, 6 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members | Free for students with valid I.D. \n“[A] perfectly cut jewel of a movie\,”—Manohla Dargis\, New York Times \nFatherland centers on the relationship between the Nobel Prize-winning writer Thomas Mann (Hanns Zischler) and his daughter Erika (Sandra Hüller)—actress\, writer and rally driver. In the summer of 1949\, at the height of the Cold War\, father and daughter embark on a challenging and emotional road trip in a black Buick taking them across a Germany in ruins—from U.S.-dominated Frankfurt to Soviet-controlled Weimar. Returning home after sixteen years of exile in the U.S.\, Thomas Mann must face not only a divided fatherland\, but also a deep fracture within his own family. \nWith Fatherland\, Pawlikowski picks up where he left off with his award-winning Ida and Cold War\, exploring—in his elliptic\, distilled style—the themes of identity\, family\, love and guilt amid the turmoil and confusion of post-war Europe. Poland’s selection for consideration for the Best International Film Oscar. 2026\, Poland/Germany/Italy/France\, DCP\, in German\, English\, French\, and Russian with English subtitles\, 82 minutes.
