SUMMARY:Possible Love (Ganeunghan sarang) at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Possible Love (Ganeunghan sarang)\nDirected by Lee Chang-dong \nSunday\, October 25\, 3 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members | Free for students with valid I.D. \n“Sharply observed\, bitingly political.”—Manohla Dargis\, New York Times \nAward-winning filmmaker Lee Chang-dong’s (Burning) heavily anticipated new film is a tale of deep yearning\, envy\, and grief. Every couple wants to find some sense of happiness. \nFor Ho-seok and Mi-ok the hope is to move on from the trauma caused by the disastrous outcome of a labor dispute. When they approached by young\, ambitious documentary filmmaker Ye-ji to take part in her latest project\, they become intimately intertwined with her and her business mogul husband Sand-woo. \nRevelation of interpersonal suffering come to light—both in front of and behind the camera—as the documentary develops\, and tensions between the couples start to rise. Questions are asked as to who gets to tell whose story\, who speaks for whom\, and what responsibilities observers have when taking on the perspective of the disenfranchised. As the lives of filmmaker and subjects become increasingly entangled\, tensions mount. \nThrough purposeful and layered storytelling\, Possible Love quietly surfaces themes of social class and power. Winner of the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival and South Korea’s submission for consideration for the Best International Film Oscar. 2026\, South Korea\, DCP\, in Korean and English with English subtitles\, 164 minutes. Rated R.

SUMMARY:You Had to Be There at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Music + Film \nYou Had to Be There:\nHow the Toronto Godspell Ignited the Comedy Revolution\, Spread Love & Overalls\, and Created a Community That Changed the World (In a Canadian Kind of Way)\nDirected by Nick Davis \nWednesday\, October 21\, 7 pm CINEMA + | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed and LPM members | Free for students with valid I.D. \n“Exuberant and essential.”—Variety \nThis movie is a blast\, telling the story of how a cast of unknown comedians in 1972 Toronto\, including Martin Short\, Gilda Radner\, Eugene Levy\, Andrea Martin\, Dave Thomas\, and Victor Garber\, put on a production of Godspell that laid the groundwork for modern comedy. Paul Shaffer was even the musical director of the production. \nAll surviving cast members of the 1972 show appear in the film\, which is a delightful time at the movies chronicling the birth of the next generation of comic superstars. The film recounts a pivotal moment in comedy history in hilarious\, moving\, and inspiring detail. Executive produced by Judd Apatow. A selection of the Toronto International Film Festival. 2025\, Canada/U.S.\, DCP\, 98 minutes. Recommended for 15+. \nCINEMA + with a post-screening discussion by the film’s editor Doug Abel who is from Louisville. \nCo-presented with WFPK

SUMMARY:My Brothers Wedding at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:My Brothers Wedding \nDirected by Charles Burnett \nSunday\, October 4\, 3 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members | Free for students with I.D. \n“My Brother’s Wedding is the quintessential example of Burnett’s status as a premiere intergenerational storyteller.”—Robert Daniels\, RogerEbert.com \nSouth Central LA\, the early 1980s. Pierce Mundy (Everett Silas) is always on the move without ever really getting anywhere – kept busy by his parents\, their dry cleaning shop\, friends and neighbors. His childhood buddies are all in prison or dead and his best friend Soldier (Ronnie Bell) is just getting out of jail. Pierce’s brother Wendell (Monte Easter)\, on the other hand\, is an up-and-coming lawyer set to marry an upper-middle-class woman (Gaye Shannon-Burnett). Pierce is entirely lacking in ambition\, to the consternation of his Bible-thumping mother (Jessie Holmes)\, and yet he is an integral part of life in the neighborhood. When Soldier is killed in a car accident\, Pierce’s conflicting obligations to family and friends manifest in the choice between his brother’s wedding and his best friend’s funeral\, both falling on the same day. \nCharles Burnett’s second feature after Killer of Sheep is a tragicomic classic of New Black Cinema in which lived realities are shown in even the smallest of supporting roles\, complex and attentive. Pierce’s wanderings reveal a portrait of a young man and a community defined in equal measure by stagnation\, resignation\, resistance and joie de vivre. 1983\, U.S.\, DCP\, 81 minutes. Recommended for 16+. \nDigitally restored and remastered by Milestone Films in collaboration with the UCLA Film & Television Archive and the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. SUMMARY:Exhibition on Screen: James McNeill Whistler at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition on Screen: James McNeill Whistler\nDirected by David Bickerstaff \nSunday\, October 4\, 12:30 pm CINEMA + | BUY TICKETS \n$14 | $10 Speed members \nIn an era of great change and great beauty emerged the character of James McNeill Whistler. Considered by some to be one of the great innovators of 19th century art\, he was a contemporary of the Impressionists\, much admired by Vincent Van Gogh and Édouard Manet. Boldly experimental and famously witty\, Whistler disrupted the strict conventions of Victorian society in pursuit of a new cult of beauty\, creating “art for art’s sake” and earning himself a place in the history of great art. He found a parallel between painting and music\, and entitled many of his paintings “arrangements\,” “harmonies\,” and “nocturnes\,” emphasizing the importance of tonal unity in his work. \nHis most famous painting\, Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1 (1871)\, commonly known as Whistler’s Mother\, is a revered and often parodied portrait of motherhood. It is arguably one of the most famous paintings in history\, and this film will unveil the artist behind the art. \nTate Britain is now holding the first major retrospective of Whistler in three decades. This blockbuster exhibition promises to reawaken the world to just how important Whistler is to art history\, uniting world-famous masterpieces with rarely seen works. This will be an unmissable chance to get to know this visually spectacular artist and the influence he has had on those who followed. 2027\, U.K. DCP\, 90 minutes. Recommended for 12+ \nCINEMA + with a post-screening opportunity to view a selection of the Speed’s 90+ works by Whistler on paper selected and presented by Kim Spence\, Senior Director of Collections and Curator of Works on Paper

SUMMARY:Filipiñana at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Filipiñana \nDirected by Rafael Manuel \nSaturday\, October 3\, 3 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members | Free for students with I.D. \n“Impossibly gorgeous shot after impossibly gorgeous shot. It’s not an exaggeration to say that quite literally every frame is a work of art.”—Taylor Gates\, Collider \nIsabel\, a 17-year-old from the rural north of the Philippines\, works at a posh country club outside Manila. Amid stifling heat and pervasive drought\, she lines up golf balls for powerful men to drive into the carefully manicured verdant horizon. \nBetween shifts\, she wanders the immaculate grounds\, sampling its luxuries and exploring its liminal spaces. The club’s members\, including an industrialist and his expatriate niece\, the president and his pampered wife\, and a slew of Chinese tourists\, engage in a complex dance \nwith the doting and subservient staff. \nBut something is rotting beneath the pristine fairways of the elite resort\, as Isabel discovers when she tries to return a mislaid golf club to its patriarchal director\, Dr. Palanca. The deeper she journeys into its most exclusive corners\, the closer she gets to the violent truths of the club\, her native Philippines\, and her own past. \nWinner of a Special Jury Award for Creative Vision from the Sundance Film Festival and the Philippines’ submission for consideration for the Best International Film Oscar. 2026\, Philippines/Singapore/U.K./France/The Netherlands\, DCP\, in Filipino\, English\, and Ilokano with English subtitles\, 100 minutes.
