SUMMARY:Reading Lolita in Tehran at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Reading Lolita in Tehran\nDirected by Eran Riklis \nSunday\, August 2\, 3 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members \n“Gripping—Truly a film for these times.”—Arash Azizi\, The Atlantic \nThis adaptation of Azar Nafisi’s #1 New York Times bestselling memoir Reading Lolita in Tehran is a remarkable exploration of women’s resilience in revolutionary Iran. \nAs Islamic morality squads stage arbitrary raids in Tehran and as fundamentalists seize hold of the universities\, Azar Nafisi\, an inspired teacher\, secretly gathers six of her most committed female students to read forbidden western classics. Unaccustomed to being asked to speak their minds\, they soon removed their veils\, their stories intertwining with the novels they read: just like the heroines of Nabokov\, F. Scott Fitzgerald\, Henry James or Jane Austen\, the women in Nafisi’s living room dare to dream\, hope and love as we experience the complexity of the lives of individuals facing political\, moral and personal siege. \nThe film features striking performances by Golshifteh Farahani (Patterson) and Zar Amir-Ebrahimi (Holy Spider)\, actors who face bans from Iran’s Islamic regime. 2026\, Israel/Italy/U.K.\, DCP\, in English and Persian with English subtitles\, 107 minutes. SUMMARY:Mary Oliver: Saved by the Beauty of the World at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Mary Oliver: Saved by the Beauty of the World\nDirected by Sasha Waters Freyer \nSunday\, August 2\, 1 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed and Women in Film-KY members \n“I am moved by [the film’s] soft nature that mirrors Oliver’s practice and mind\,”—Cortlyn Kelly\, RogerEbert.com \nIf poetry had a pop icon\, Mary Oliver would be it. Celebrated best-selling poet\, Pulitzer Prize-winner\, lover of dogs and long walks in the woods\, openly queer but intensely private\, Oliver was America’s unlikely contemporary mystic\, stalking the ponds and forests of Cape Cod for nearly fifty years in order to open herself – and her readers – to the known and unknowable world. From a lonely childhood to literary fame\, Oliver’s life was shaped by devotion to nature\, paying attention\, and the long journey toward learning to love and to be loved. Her poems inspire liberals and conservatives\, atheists and believers\, naturalists and urbanites\, speaking directly to contemporary anxieties about attention\, presence\, and the human relationship with the natural world – issues that feel especially pressing in an era of climate crisis\, digital distraction\, and social fragmentation. \nFeaturing interviews with her close friends\, including John Waters\, never-before-seen personal photos\, notebooks\, and correspondence from her archive\, and recitations of her work by Stephen Colbert\, Lucy Dacus\, Steve Buscemi\, and Oprah Winfrey\, Mary Oliver: Saved by the Beauty of the World considers the poet’s long lifetime of work in context\, capturing the uniqueness of her world and the natural beauty that inspired her. 2026\, U.S.\, DCP\, 91 minutes. SUMMARY:The Cramps and The Mutants: The Napa State Tapes at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:The Cramps and The Mutants: The Napa State Tapes\nDirected by Joe Rees\, Mike Plante\, and Jason Willis \nThursday\, July 30\, 7 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed and LPM members \n“One of the most seminal performances in the history of punk rock.”—Colby Smith\, The Aither \nOn June 13\, 1978\, the soon-to-be legendary rock band The Cramps went to play at Napa State\, a psychiatric hospital in the small town of Napa in Northern California. Opening for them was The Mutants\, an eclectic septet of art school punks from nearby San Francisco. Also in the van was seminal Bay Area art collective Target Video\, there to capture the show using one of the first video cameras available to the public\, democratizing a medium controlled by mainstream media outlets. \nWhat resulted may be the most unique punk show ever\, as the two bands played for the residents at the hospital\, a rehabilitation facility that was skimming the danger of being shut down by former California Governor Ronald Reagan.\nHere for the first time ever: the long-lost tape of The Mutants playing at Napa State and the full tape of The Cramps’ show\, both unedited and fully remastered from the original reel-to-reel videotape. In between the shows is We Were There To Be There\, a new short documentary about how the Napa State show happened and its lasting effect. 1978-2023\, U.S.\, DCP\, 72 minutes. SUMMARY:Cockfighter at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Three Starring Warren Oates\nCockfighter\nDirected by Monte Hellman \nWednesday\, July 29\, 6 pm | BUY TICKETS\n$12 | $8 Speed members \n“Hellman embraces\, with visual nuance\, a world of back roads and forests\, grim motels and ramshackle arenas\, and he approaches the intricacies of the subculture … with a cool Hemingwayesque moralism.”—Richard Brody\, The New Yorker \nNew Hollywood’s abstract poet Monte Hellman (Two-Lane Blacktop) delivers a powerful tale of the pains of drifting in his 1974 classic Cockfighter. Frank (Warren Oates\, The Wild Bunch) is a chicken fighting trainer that has taken a vow of silence until he can successfully raise a champion. His pursuit of that goal will prove both the breadth of his skill and the depths of his empty life after living on obsession. An existentialist riff on The Odyssey with an extra coat of ‘70s grit\, Cockfighter bravely explores the suffering of an empty victory\, a view from the top with no bottom in sight. 1974\, U.S.\, DCP\, 83 minutes. Rated R.

SUMMARY:The Revisionist | 2026 Flyover Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:2026 Flyover Film Festival \nThe Revisionist\nDirected\, Produced & Written by Alex Vlack \nSunday\, July 26\, 3:30 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$15 | $10 Speed and LFS members \nSearching for inspiration for her next novel\, Elise subtly manipulates the people closest to her like characters in a book. The sudden return of an old friend challenges just how far she’s willing to go in pursuit of her art. \nElise Keller (Alison Brie) is a successful writer working on what will hopefully be her next best-selling novel. Only one problem: She’s stuck with a bad case of writer’s block. When her long-time friend John (André Holland) returns to their hometown\, Elise thinks she has a perfect solution: John can look after her husband Jacob’s (Tom Sturridge) aging father David (Dustin Hoffman) and record their conversations for potential inspiration. But as individual relationships deepen and the line between fiction and reality blurs\, secrets are unearthed\, boundaries are crossed\, and the foursome finds themselves forever changed. \nFor his debut narrative feature film\, Alex Vlack incisively explores the complexities of the creative process and the lengths an artist is willing to go in pursuit of greatness. Aided by a sublime cast and an anxiety-inducing score from composer Philip Klein\, The Revisionist is a sleek and sophisticated peak into the mind of an artist on the edge.—Cara Cusumano \nThe film world premiered at Tribeca Film Festival. 2026\, U.S.\, DCP\, 90 minutes. SUMMARY:Pinball | 2026 Flyover Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:2026 Flyover Film Festival \nPinball\nDirected by Naveen Chaubal \nSunday\, July 26\, 12:30 pm CINEMA+ | BUY TICKETS \n$15 | $10 Speed and LFS members \nIn a contemplative coming of age portrait\, Pinball follows Yosef\, a spirited athlete\, in Louisville\, Kentucky as he dives into the memories of his journey from Iraq to America and what it means to chase his dreams in the shadow of a war that displaced his family from their Iraqi homeland. \nAt first glance\, Yosef is a typical American teenager. He’s unsure if college is the right path\, works a restaurant job to help his family\, and he carries the quiet\, persistent hope that his life might hold something larger. However\, he was born in Baghdad and fled with his family to Egypt after the U.S. invaded Iraq in 2004. He was four years old. Of all places\, they received asylum in Louisville\, Kentucky. Now\, as his younger sister Azraa travels to Egypt\, Yosef finds himself unsettled. Her journey reopens questions he has long kept at bay: Where does he belong? What does it mean to build a future in a place shaped by the same forces that displaced his family? Is the life he is living truly his own – or simply the safest one available? The film world premiered at True/False Film Festival. 2026\, U.S.\, DCP\, 83 minutes. Recommended for 13+. \nCinema + with post-screening Q&A with director Naveen Chaubal.
