SUMMARY:Possible Love (Ganeunghan sarang) at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Possible Love (Ganeunghan sarang)\nDirected by Lee Chang-dong \nSaturday\, October 24\, 2 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members | Free for students with valid I.D. \n“Sharply observed\, bitingly political.”—Manohla Dargis\, New York Times \nAward-winning filmmaker Lee Chang-dong’s (Burning) heavily anticipated new film is a tale of deep yearning\, envy\, and grief. Every couple wants to find some sense of happiness. \nFor Ho-seok and Mi-ok the hope is to move on from the trauma caused by the disastrous outcome of a labor dispute. When they approached by young\, ambitious documentary filmmaker Ye-ji to take part in her latest project\, they become intimately intertwined with her and her business mogul husband Sand-woo. \nRevelation of interpersonal suffering come to light—both in front of and behind the camera—as the documentary develops\, and tensions between the couples start to rise. Questions are asked as to who gets to tell whose story\, who speaks for whom\, and what responsibilities observers have when taking on the perspective of the disenfranchised. As the lives of filmmaker and subjects become increasingly entangled\, tensions mount. \nThrough purposeful and layered storytelling\, Possible Love quietly surfaces themes of social class and power. Winner of the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival and South Korea’s submission for consideration for the Best International Film Oscar. 2026\, South Korea\, DCP\, in Korean and English with English subtitles\, 164 minutes. Rated R.

SUMMARY:Begotten at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:New 4K Restoration \nBegotten\nDirected by E. Elias Merhige \nWednesday\, October 28\, 6 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members | Free for students with valid I.D. \n“One of the most important films of modern times.”—Susan Sontag \nBegotten has no characters in the ordinary sense. Its final credits name three principal figures: \nGod Killing Himself. \nMother Earth. \nSon of Earth — Flesh on Bone \nThe entire film is what those names do to each other and to the earth. God Killing Himself tears open his body and dies. Mother Earth rises from what remains and takes his seed into herself. She gives birth to Son of Earth — Flesh on Bone. He is cast into a barren world\, seized by the Nomads\, tortured\, killed\, and briefly returned to life by his mother. The Nomads destroy her too. The Robed Figures gather what remains of mother and son\, grind their bodies down\, and return them to the soil. The ground flowers. 1989\, U.S.\, 4K DCP\, 72 minutes. Recommended for 17+.

SUMMARY:Kwaidan at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Director’s Cut 4K Restoration \nKwaidan\nDirected by Masaki Kobayashi \nThursday\, October 29\, 6 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members | Free for students with valid I.D. \n“An artistic triumph for the director Masaki Kobayashi\, his cameramen and his art directors.”—Wanda Hale \nAfter more than a decade of sober political dramas and socially minded period pieces\, the great Japanese director Masaki Kobayashi shifted gears dramatically for this rapturously stylized quartet of ghost stories. Featuring colorfully surreal sets and luminous cinematography\, these haunting tales of demonic comeuppance and spiritual trials\, adapted from writer Lafcadio Hearn’s collections of Japanese folklore\, are existentially frightening and meticulously crafted. 1968\, Japan\, 4K DCP\, in Japanese with English subtitles\, 183 minutes. SUMMARY:Fjord at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Fjord\nDirected by Cristian Mungiu \nFriday\, October 30\, 6 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members | Free for students with valid I.D. \n“Had me on the edge of my seat until the credits rolled.”—Radhika Seth\, Vogue \nMihai (Sebastian Stan)\, a digital technician\, and his wife Lisbet (Renate Reinsve) move from his country\, Romanis\, to raise their five children in her remote hometown in Norway. Quickly\, however\, the family’s devotion to fundamentalist Christian beliefs leads them first into conflict\, and then into legal peril\, with liberal school authorities. \nThis achingly beautiful\, painfully relevant drama by Oscar-winning writer-director Cristian Mungiu (4 Months\, 3 Weeks\, and 2 Days) follows the couple’s increasing anguished confusion as they become enmeshed in accusations and punitive procedures they barely comprehend. As the stakes grow higher\, Mia\, their next-door neighbor\, reluctantly agrees to defend them in court. \nFjord\, awarded the Cannes Palme d’Or (the second win for Mungiu)\, provides a meticulous\, subtle\, and ironic study of how ideological extremes\, misconceptions\, and systematic contradictions can tear a community apart. Romania’s submission for consideration for the Best International Film Oscar. 2026\, Romania/France/Norway/Sweden/Denmark\, DCP\, in Norwegian\, Romanian\, and English with English subtitles\, 146 minutes. SUMMARY:Fjord at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Fjord\nDirected by Cristian Mungiu \nWednesday\, November 4\, 6 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members | Free for students with valid I.D. SUMMARY:Once Upon a Time in Harlem at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Once Upon a Time in Harlem\nConceived by William Greaves and Directed by David Greaves \nFriday\, November 13\, 6 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members | Free for students with valid I.D. \n“It’s an invigorated portrait of radical changes as the byproduct of art\, politics\, and roiling intellectual debate.”—Nick Schager\, The Daily Beast \nA decade after his death\, genre-defying filmmaker William Greaves has one last trick up his sleeve with what he considered the most important event he captured on film: a 1972 party he engineered with the living luminaries of the Harlem Renaissance. For four hours\, this extraordinary group – many of whom had not seen each other in fifty years – reminisced\, critiqued\, argued\, laughed and drank while wrestling with their place in a rapidly shifting cultural landscape. \nShot on 16mm film\, newly restored and now directed by Greaves’ son David\, this landmark film is at once a self-exploration and an inquiry into the heart of the critical mass of energy called the Harlem Renaissance. William Greaves’ intent was not only to document these artists and intellectuals as they spoke about their lives and work but also to plumb the meaning of the extraordinary creative period in which they lived to help us better understand how culture has been passed on from one generation to another and the role that the artist plays in keeping it alive. 2026\, U.S.\, DCP\, 100 minutes.
