SUMMARY:Rose of Nevada at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:35mm Print \nRose of Nevada\nDirected by Mark Jenkin \nSaturday\, September 19\, 6 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members \n“Otherworldly\, unearthly\, dream-draped . . . a whisper of story\, suggests of fairytale and time travel\, but what makes Mark Jenkin’s films adhesive is exacting technique. Story is elusive\, but the fragments\, the instants are concrete.”—Ray Pride\, Newcity \nWeaving a hypnotic tapestry of bold analogue imagery\, spellbinding storytelling\, and mesmeric sound\, Rose of Nevada reinforces Mark Jenkins as a uniquely singular directorial voice. \nIn a forgotten fishing village\, a boat mysteriously appears in the old harbor. The Rose of Nevada\, lost at sea with all hands 30 years ago\, has returned.  For the few who remember\, it’s a sign. The Rose of Nevada must go out to sea again\, maybe then the luck of the devastated village will turn. \nNick (George MacKay) takes a job aboard the boat to provide for his young family. Alongside him\, newly arrived Liam (Callum Turner) joins the crew\, desperate to escape his past. They head to sea and after a successful trip return to harbor. But something is amiss. They’ve slipped back in time\, and the villagers greet them as if they are the original crew. 2025\, U.K.\, 35mm\, 114 minutes. Recommended for 16+

SUMMARY:Speed Studio: Process + Practice | Adult Workshop
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nInstructor: Stephen Batiz\n“Moment in Time” \nInspired by Kentucky cabinetmaker William Lowry’s remarkable tall clock\, participants will design and build a working clock with a creative twist. Like Lowry’s clock\, which transforms from a daytime to a nighttime scene\, your clock will feature a moving element that changes as time passes. Using simple materials commonly found at home\, we will create one-of-a- kind functional artworks. No prior experience is required- just curiosity and creativity. \nBio: Stephen Batiz is a self-taught painter\, illustrator\, and installation artist exploring the spaces between isolation and connection. Through painting\, drawing\, and interactive experiences\, he creates work that invites people to slow down\, participate\, and reflect on their own presence in the world. Rooted in curiosity and experimentation\, Batiz’s practice transforms personal symbolism and material exploration into shared moments of recognition and connection. \n

SUMMARY:Remake at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Remake\nDirected by Ross McElwee \nSunday\, August 30\, 3 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members \n“As a meditation on memory and the passage of time\, it is stunning.” –Alissa Wilkinson\, New York Times \nFilmmaker Ross McElwee has spent forty years recording himself and his family\, creating documentaries that chronicle the shifting contours of American society through the lens of personal history. His son Adrian grew up inside those films\, and eventually began experimenting with the camera himself. When a Hollywood producer acquires the rights to adapt McElwee’s 1986 breakthrough Sherman’s March into a work of fiction\, twenty-year-old Adrian sees a chance for his father to finally reach a wider audience. As the adaptation stalls\, Adrian gets swept into a deepening drug addiction and dies from a fentanyl overdose\, leaving behind hours of personal video footage. Retracing Adrian’s final years\, McElwee reckons with what his camera captured and what remained hauntingly out of frame. As he reflects on a lifetime behind the camera\, Ross’s own effort to remix and remake the movie that Adrian never got to finish takes on new significance. An ever-expanding hall of mirrors built from decades of home movies\, Remake is both McElwee’s attempt to hold onto his son\, and to let him go. 2026\, U.S.\, DCP\, 116 minutes.
