SUMMARY:WTO/99 at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:WTO/99\nDirected by Ian Bell \nSunday\, May 3\, 1 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members \n“Watching WTO/99 is like peering into a portal to the future.”—Alissa Wilkinson\, New York Times \nFrom November 30 to December 3 1999\, tens of thousands of people occupied the streets of downtown Seattle to make known their concerns about the existence of the World Trade Organization and its impacts on the environment\, human rights\, and labor in the largest protests against economic globalization the U.S. has ever seen. \nThe protests brought together people from divergent sections of society—anarchists\, environmentalists\, labor unions\, consumer protection advocates\, pro-democracy groups\, and even religious organizations. These protestors gathered in direct action hoping to dissuade world leadership from continued support of the WTO and strived to focus the public’s attention to the kind of future the WTO would bring forth. \nBuilding from a thousand-hour archive\, which includes more than 400 hours of never-before-seen footage\, WTO/99 reanimates the ideological conflicts that drew thousands to the streets of Seattle in hopes for a better future. The film is an immersive visual artifact of a week that brought 40\,000 people together to warn of environmental collapse\, the vanishing middle class\, and what the full inclusion of China in the World Trade Organization would mean for our collective future. The protesters—seen as a rabble-rousing nuisance at the time\, yet appearing prophetic today—were met with extreme violence by a militarized police force\, an all-too-fitting way to usher in a new century; one that is now defined by the U.S. failure to address climate change and increasing state aggression. 2025\, U.S.\, DCP\, 100 minutes. SUMMARY:Hello Dankness at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Hello Dankness\nDirected by Soda Jerk \nSunday\, May 3\, 3:30 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members \n“Hello Dankness belongs to a venerable underground-film tradition of treating refracted entertainment as a mirror for society.”—Ben Kenigsberg\, New York Times \nHello Dankness is a political fable that bears witness to the psychotropic spectacle of American politics from 2016 to 2021\, and the mythologies and lore that took root around it. Taking form as a suburban stoner musical\, the film follows a neighborhood through these years as consensus reality disintegrates into conspiracy and other contagions. What unfolds is a rogue retelling of history in which hotdogs debate the culture wars\, trashcans preach QAnon\, zombies rally for revolution\, and real events are refashioned as Broadway bangers from Cats\, Les Miserables\, Annie\, and The Phantom of the Opera. \nThere are songs and dancing\, moments of menace and melancholy\, shitposting and deep sincerity. Created with Soda Jerk’s signature methodology\, Hello Dankness is entirely composed of sampled media. Utilizing extensive rotoscoping and digital VFX\, the feature length narrative has been grafted together from almost one thousand film\, television and audio sources. \nBegun in 2016 and labored on throughout the Covid-19 pandemic\, Hello Dankness is a record of the time\, written from the time. The Hollywood Reporter announced Hello Dankness as ”the most original and bizarrely elevating movie of the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival.” \nThe cast of characters include Tom Hanks\, Annette Bening\, Bruce Dern\, Ice Cube\, Wayne and Garth\, Maya and Ana\, Rue and Jules\, Seth Rogen and Reyn Doi. American politicians play themselves\, with Jesse Eisenberg in the role of Mark Zuckerberg\, and The Phantom of the Opera as Vladimir Putin. 2022\, Australia\, DCP\, 70 minutes. Recommended for 16+.

SUMMARY:Speed Social: Connect + Inspire
DESCRIPTION:Speed Social: Connect + Inspire  \nA monthly evening gathering for adults to unwind and create\nCost: $18/non-member\, $15/member \n \nREGISTER\nSpeed Social is a relaxed evening program for adults to connect\, sketch\, and socialize. Guests can enjoy music\, drinks\, and an informal drawing session. No instruction is required—just time to relax\, be creative\, and enjoy art in a social\, welcoming atmosphere. Held after museum hours. Gallery admission is not included. Cash bar provided by Marigold Catering Co.  \nMay Programming\nLive model drawing session and a performance/intimate conversation connecting Echoes on the Ohio with local performers Heather Summers\, Lacey Guthrie\, and Nadia Ramlagan \nBeginning at 5:30 pm\, join us for an intimate evening of performance and conversation featuring Heather Summers\, Lacey Guthrie\, and Nadia Ramlagan. Through folk storytelling\, sound as art\, and reflections on inherited trauma\, the program unfolds in dialogue with the sound work Sunset Song (2003) by Susan Philipsz featuring the ballad Banks of the Ohio\, which will resonate throughout the evening. Together\, these voices create a space for listening\, memory\, and collective reflection. In addition to the performance and discussion\, we will host a live model drawing session in the Atrium and a cash bar from Marigold\, with non-alcoholic options. This event is 18+ \nPerformer Bios \n \nLacey Guthrie is a songwriter and musician from rural Indiana\, now living in Louisville\, Kentucky for about 20 years. Her project roster has moved through a lot of sounds over the years\, from psych and noise to prog\, punk\, folk\, and dream pop\, but she always finds herself on the hook of melody and emotion. She looks at her solo project as a limitless\, genre-less composition and self-expression playground. Solo records include The King of Holding Onto Things (2021) and Flower-Eating Monster (2024)\, with a new not-yet-titled album in the works. She’s also in a band called duchess with Katie Peabody\, Victoria Fisher\, and Todd Cook that combines organic folk themes with post-punk and experimental elements. Appalachian folk traditions and balladry have shown up only a handful of times in her own performances\, but she’s spent most of her musical life in close company with people who carry those traditions forward. It’s been part of the soundtrack to life in Kentucky\, and has woven itself into how she hears things and how she writes. In the last few years she’s been making large-scale textile art pieces\, and has really been enjoying exploring that medium. \n \nHeather Summers is a singer\, songwriter\, and multi-instrumentalist living in New Albany\, Indiana. Heather’s deep love for traditional old-time fiddle and banjo tunes and ballads originating in the British Isles influence her songwriting and instrumentation style. Her songs invoke themes of the natural world to allow exploration of humanity\, trauma\, and healing. In 2018 she recorded a self titled album as one half of The Other Years on No Quarter Records. in 2020\, her song Red Tailed Hawk was covered and recorded by Bonnie “Prince” Billy and Bill Callahan. \n \nLouisville multi-instrumentalist and singer Nadia Ramlagan grew up in Maryland where she immersed herself in local folk music such as Ola Belle Reed and her nephews\, Hugh and Zane Campbell. She was first drawn to the sounds of old time banjo and fiddle traveling through West Virginia more than a decade ago. She currently plays with Louisville-based old time trio Man Eater (Grace Rogers\, Blakeley Burger)\, and Kentucky Wild Horse (John Harrod). \n

DESCRIPTION:Join Chris Reitz\, Director of the Hite Institute of Art and Design at the University of Louisville\, for an engaging lecture connected to the exhibition Abstract Expressionists: The Women (on view May 16–August 30). \nThis session will explore what “abstraction” means in art\, how modern artists and critics invented the concept\, and how historians are reconsidering it today. You’ll learn about the origins of modern abstract painting\, about its redeployment in postwar Abstract Expressionism\, and about the women who were central to both.\nThrough guided discussion and close looking\, participants will develop their own understanding of abstraction\, one that is thoughtful\, flexible\, and open to different perspectives. Students\, artists\, and anyone curious about art are encouraged to attend. After the seminar\, participants are invited to visit the exhibition to continue the experience. \nChris Reitz is Director of the Hite Institute of Art and Design and Associate Professor of Critical and Curatorial Studies at the University of Louisville. He is the author of the book Martin Kippenberger: Everything is Everywhere. \nThis lecture session is free and open to the public. \nJoan MitchellWhen They Were Gone\, 1977Oil on canvas\, 94 x 71 in.© Estate of Joan Mitchell.Courtesy of the Levett Collection and FAMMPhoto: Fraser Marr.\n\n

SUMMARY:May Adult Workshop - Adult Abstract Painting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nAbstract Expressionists: The Women – Adult Abstract Painting Workshop\nFacilitated by Sara Noori\nStep into the vibrant\, expressive world of Abstract Expressionists: The Women. Inspired by artists such as Helen Frankenthaler\, Joan Mitchell\, Vivian Springford\, Grace Hartigan\, and Lee Krasner\, this workshop invites you to explore painting as a space for movement\, emotion\, and discovery.\nEngage in a process-based approach to painting that emphasizes exploration over outcome. Through guided exercises and technical experimentation with layering\, movement\, and mark-making\, you will be invited to experiment with building a visual language rooted in intuition and creative risk-taking.\nA mix of visual and creative prompts will guide the process and spark inspiration\, offering accessible ways to generate ideas and move into image-making. We will also explore how to “read” abstract paintings\, not by figuring them out\, but through personal observation and interpretation.\nNo prior experience is necessary. Enjoy a supportive\, open-ended workshop to learn\, explore\, reflect\, and create!\n____\nArtist Bio \nSara Noori \nSara Noori is an artist and educator whose work explores identity\, collaboration\, and the body\, both individual and collective\, as a host for culture\, memory\, and creative survival. They have organized and facilitated public programs including Family Day at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; led public and private art classes at elementary\, middle\, and high schools throughout the Chicago area; taught art at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago; and collaborated with the Community Belonging program at the Speed Art Museum in Louisville\, KY. In 2023\, Noori was invited to co-create a site-specific mural titled Homecoming for Amy Sherald’s Portrait of Breonna Taylor: In the Garden at the Speed Art Museum. As an arts educator they have presented as part of the 2026 Leonardo/ISAST LASER Talks in Louisville\, and worked with the Backside Learning Center at Churchill Downs\, Dreams With Wings\, First Hour Grief\, Fund for the Arts\, Frazier History Museum\, and in school classrooms supporting students\, participants\, and communities through material exploration\, collaborative making\, and confidence-building practices. Across institutions and community spaces\, their work prioritizes care\, adaptability\, and the cultivation of environments where creative growth can take root. \nArtwork credit \n“ It’s my house\, and I live here.”\nStretcher bars\, plastic\, glitter\, acrylic paints\, plastisol\, tissue paper\, synthetic hair\, screen printed\, and hand-detailed Persian rug reproduction\n2017–2022
