You’ll learn about the origins of modern abstract painting\, about its redeployment in postwar Abstract Expressionism\, and about the women who were central to both.\nThrough guided discussion and close looking\, participants will develop their own understanding of abstraction\, one that is thoughtful\, flexible\, and open to different perspectives. Students\, artists\, and anyone curious about art are encouraged to attend. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nAbstract Expressionists: The Women – Adult Abstract Painting Workshop\nFacilitated by Sara Noori\nStep into the vibrant\, expressive world of Abstract Expressionists: The Women. Inspired by artists such as Helen Frankenthaler\, Joan Mitchell\, Vivian Springford\, Grace Hartigan\, and Lee Krasner\, this workshop invites you to explore painting as a space for movement\, emotion\, and discovery. Engage in a process-based approach to painting that emphasizes exploration over outcome. Through guided exercises and technical experimentation with layering\, movement\, and mark-making\, you will be invited to experiment with building a visual language rooted in intuition and creative risk-taking. A mix of visual and creative prompts will guide the process and spark inspiration\, offering accessible ways to generate ideas and move into image-making. We will also explore how to “read” abstract paintings\, not by figuring them out\, but through personal observation and interpretation.\n\nNo prior experience is necessary. Enjoy a supportive\, open-ended workshop to learn\, explore\, reflect\, and create!\n____\nArtist Bio \nSara Noori \nSara Noori is an artist and educator whose work explores identity\, collaboration\, and the body\, both individual and collective\, as a host for culture\, memory\, and creative survival. They have organized and facilitated public programs including Family Day at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; led public and private art classes at elementary\, middle\, and high schools throughout the Chicago area; taught art at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago; and collaborated with the Community Belonging program at the Speed Art Museum in Louisville\, KY. In 2023\, Noori was invited to co-create a site-specific mural titled Homecoming for Amy Sherald’s Portrait of Breonna Taylor: In the Garden at the Speed Art Museum. As an arts educator they have presented as part of the 2026 Leonardo/ISAST LASER Talks in Louisville\, and worked with the Backside Learning Center at Churchill Downs\, Dreams With Wings\, First Hour Grief\, Fund for the Arts\, Frazier History Museum\, and in school classrooms supporting students\, participants\, and communities through material exploration\, collaborative making\, and confidence-building practices. The program is designed for adults\, students\, and those who enjoy focused discussion in a supportive environment.  \nCost: $20/non-member adult\, $15/member adult\, $5/student\n \nREGISTER\nTopic: Matt Weir on Work in Sculpture and the Fulcrum for Yesterday to Tomorrow: A Bronze Casting Legacy Transitions\nIn this talk\, Matt Weir explores his sculpture practice—his entry into the field\, projects\, materials\, and challenges—while connecting his development to the history of Bright Foundry and its transition to Falls Art Foundry\, a bronze casting foundry that has supported artists in Louisville and the region for 50 years. (Photo by Brian Bohannon)\n \n\nMatt Weir is a Louisville–based sculptor working in stone\, bronze\, and mixed media. His work is nurtured by a deep interest in the natural world and its influence on behavior. Through a broad material practice\, his body of artwork explores the relationships between behavior\, environment\, and identity. \nWeir graduated cum laude with a BFA from the University of Louisville Hite Art Institute in 2004\, with minors in Humanities and Art History. During this time\, he apprenticed with a diverse range of professional artists and studios\, most notably Bright Foundry\, a bronze art foundry. After Bright Foundry closed in 2016\, Weir co-organized the team that continued its legacy as Falls Art Foundry\, where he works to support\, educate\, and expose artists to the lost-wax casting process and Louisville’s unique sculptural tradition. \nNotable works from Weir’s portfolio include the 100-ton limestone land artwork Earth Measure at Bernheim Forest in Clermont; Lithostill\, a monumental stone\, copper\, and stainless steel sculpture at Maker’s Mark Distillery in Loretto; the bronze Panthera tigris at St. Xavier High School in Louisville; and Presence\, a geologically orienting “you are here” marker installed in downtown Louisville. \nFor the past twelve years\, Matt has been preoccupied with a piece of petrified wood in an ongoing body of work titled The Petrified Wood* Project. This exhaustive artwork is an effort to understand a profound object by narrating its passage through a human moment. \nWeir maintains a personal studio in Louisville. As a result\, the 68-year-old Chocobar was shot and killed\, and two other community members were wounded. \nIn her expansive and enlightening first feature documentary\, Argentinean filmmaker Lucrecia Martel (Zama) takes a sweeping approach to this tragic true story\, triangulating the murder trial of the three men\, the lives of the Chocobar and his fellow Chuchagasta people\, and the centuries-old\, colonialist legacy of land and property theft across Latin America. \nWith a ravishing\, at time vertiginous visual approach to filming the natural beauty of the contested land\, Martel pays cinematic tribute to people whom others systematically tried to erase from history. 2025\, Argentina/U.S./Mexico/France/Netherlands/Denmark\, DCP\, in Spanish with English subtitles\, 122 minutes.
