SUMMARY:Lamplightings: Masters of Abstract Animation at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Lamplightings\nMasters of Abstract Animation\nVarious Directors\nSunday\, June 7\, 1 pm\nFree\, first come\, first served \nThroughout the history of cinema\, filmmakers have repeatedly sought to push outside of the bounds of the camera’s lens. With the use of animation\, artists were able to break away from the photographic image and soon after began to step into the world of abstraction. In this program a selection of exemplary works has been drawn together demonstrating the many methods some of these artists have used to defy representation. Techniques including the use of a mechanical computer (Permutations)\, collage (Film Nos. 1-5\, 7\, & 10)\, drawing directly on film (Color Cry)\, and meticulous hand-drawn animation (Heavy-Light and Fuji) all produce distinct and irreplicable visual phenomena that can only be translated onto celluloid. A highly direct form of cinematic art\, abstract animation is a deeply emotive yet oft overlooked throughline in experimental film. 1952-1980\, U.S.\, 16mm\, 61 minutes. \nFilm Nos. 1-5\, 7\, & 10 (Early Abstractions)\nDirected by Harry Smith\nc. 1965\, U.S.\, 16mm\, 23 minutes \nFuji\nDirected by Robert Breer\n1974\, U.S.\, 16mm\, 9 minutes \nPermutations\nDirected by John Whitney\n1968\, U.S.\, 16mm\, 8 minutes \nColor Cry/Rhythm/Free Radicals/Tal Farlow/Particles In Space\nDirected by Len Lye\n1952-1980\, U.S.\, 16mm\, 14 minutes \nHeavy-Light\nDirected by Adam Beckett\n1973\, U.S.\, 16mm\, 7 minutes

SUMMARY:Trainspotting at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Trainspotting\nDirected by Danny Boyle \nSunday\, June 7\, 3 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members \nFunny\, disturbing\, tragic and deeply addictive\, Trainspotting is based on the seminal best-selling novel of the same name by Irvine Welsh. Set in gritty\, late 1980s Edinburgh\, Scotland\, it’s the story of a smart\, funny\, sickly heroin addict Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) and his so-called friends-a gaggle of loser\, liars\, psychos\, thieves and junkies. \nHilarious and harrowing\, the film charts the disintegration of their friendship as they proceed\, seemingly inevitably\, towards self-destruction. Mark alone has the insight and opportunity to escape his fate\, and we’re left to wonder if he will. 1993\, U.K.\, 4K DCP\, 93 minutes. Rated R.

SUMMARY:Amores Perros at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:4K Restoration \nAmores Perros\nDirected by Alejandro G. Iñárritu \nFriday\, June 12\, 6 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members \n“Iñárritu has conjured up a dark\, brutal vision of urban life that sticks to your skin like soot.” —David Ansen\, Newsweek \nAfter 25 years\, the legendary debut from Academy Award®-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu (Birdman\, The Revenant) returns to the big screen in a stunning restoration. A visceral reflection on human chaos\, cruelty\, and tenderness\, Amores Perros remains as bold and affecting as ever. \nAs three lives from disparate parts of Mexico City converge in a fatal car crash\, their fractured stories unfold – revealing they are more connected than they seem. \nTeenaged Octavio (Gael García Bernal) decides to run away with his brother’s wife. Desperate for cash\, he ventures into the urban underworld\, sending their love triangle into an irreversible spiral. \nBeautiful model Valeria (Goya Toledo) moves in with a lover who left his family to be with her. But the collision brings her life and career to a sudden halt\, taking away what is most important to her. \nEl Chivo (Emilio Echeverría) quietly exists as a homeless man in the shadows\, masking his occupation as a hitman. While in pursuit of a target\, he witnesses the wreck and is entangled in the aftermath. \nShot through with Rodrigo Prieto’s dynamic cinematography and Gustavo Santaolalla’s iconic score\, Amoros Perros is a true masterwork – both a seminal\, expressive portrait of Mexico City and a universal exploration of violence\, love\, and loss. 2000\, Mexico\, 4K DCP\, in Spanish with English subtitles\, 154 minutes. SUMMARY:Listen to Me at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Listen to Me\nDirected by Kanika Harris and Stephanie Etienne \nSunday\, June 14\, 3 pm\, CINEMA+ \nFree\, first come\, first served \nListen to Me follows three Black women as they navigate the journey to motherhood in a system not built to protect them. What begins as a documentary about the pregnancies of maternal health advocates becomes a powerful archive of grief\, resilience\, and healing. \nWoven together\, these unique stories offer a profound look into the complex and layered lives of Black women and the core issues that place them at higher risk for complications from pregnancy and childbirth. Through intimate storytelling and wisdom passed from mothers to daughters\, Listen to Me transcends statistics to reveal the quiet costs of survival\, the weight of advocacy while grieving\, and the audacity of joy in the face of systemic harm. \nListen to Me is a powerful call to break generational silence and center the voices of Black women. Through a life-course lens\, the film reveals that true maternal health begins with how we protect\, listen to\, and honor Black women and girls long before they ever become pregnant. \nThe film challenges us to shift the narrative from crisis response to generational care and to reimagine maternal health as a continuum of justice\, healing\, and radical listening. 2025\, U.S.\, DCP\, 77 minutes. Recommend for 15+ \nCo-presented with the Kentucky BIPOCU Filmmakers Association (KBFA)\, Black Birth Justice\, and Ed Hamilton Studio & Visitors Center. \nCINEMA+ featuring a post-screening discussion with co-directors Kanika Harris and Stephanie Etienne moderated by Black Birth Justic Executive Director and Founder Meka Kpoh. \nWe request donations of baby diapers and wipes to be shared with mothers in need. \n

SUMMARY:Speed Salon: Talks + Theory
DESCRIPTION:Speed Salon: Talks + Theory  \nA quarterly Wednesday for curious minds and cultural conversation  \nCost: $20/non-member adult\, $15/member adult\, $5/student\n \nREGISTER\nSpeed Salon brings together artists\, scholars\, filmmakers\, and cultural thinkers for engaging talks and conversation. Each session features a presentation followed by Q&A\, offering attendees the chance to think deeply\, ask questions\, and engage with contemporary ideas and creative work. The program is designed for adults\, students\, and those who enjoy focused discussion in a supportive environment.  \nGallery admission is not included.  \nSpeaker: Negarra A. Kudumu\nTitle: What Awaits Us will be\, Black \nWhat awaits Us is the moniker for the conceptual lens of the reimagination of the African Diasporic Art collection. Curatorial Assistant\, Sirene Martin is engaging in a temporal exploration of Black culture from the continent to the diaspora. Inspired by the notion of time’s spirality\, as set forth by the Bakongo peoples of central Africa\, this collection will be understood within the collision of the past\, present and future. Negarra’s lecture will be an astute expansion within this school of thought. \nNegarra A. Kudumu is an independent scholar and curator of contemporary art. Her curatorial interests focus on Afro-Surrealism\, Black Abstraction\, contemporary art from the Pacific Northwest\, Africa\, South Asia\, and their respective diasporas. Her scholarly interests focus on African Diasporic spiritual traditions of the Americas namely Palo Monte\, Conjure (also known as Hoodoo)\, and Haitian Vodou. More recently\, her interests have taken a turn towards philosophy (Hegel)\, Christian theology (Barth)\, and notions of wretchedness and betrayal (Fanon) as a way to better explain the conditions within which the aforementioned traditions developed\, the particular environment they sought to intervene upon\, and the specific category of tools they used to intervene upon said environment. \n \n
