SUMMARY:Filipiñana at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Filipiñana \nDirected by Rafael Manuel \nFriday\, October 2\, 6 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members | Free for students with I.D. \n“Impossibly gorgeous shot after impossibly gorgeous shot. It’s not an exaggeration to say that quite literally every frame is a work of art.”—Taylor Gates\, Collider \nIsabel\, a 17-year-old from the rural north of the Philippines\, works at a posh country club outside Manila. Amid stifling heat and pervasive drought\, she lines up golf balls for powerful men to drive into the carefully manicured verdant horizon. \nBetween shifts\, she wanders the immaculate grounds\, sampling its luxuries and exploring its liminal spaces. The club’s members\, including an industrialist and his expatriate niece\, the president and his pampered wife\, and a slew of Chinese tourists\, engage in a complex dance \nwith the doting and subservient staff. \nBut something is rotting beneath the pristine fairways of the elite resort\, as Isabel discovers when she tries to return a mislaid golf club to its patriarchal director\, Dr. Palanca. The deeper she journeys into its most exclusive corners\, the closer she gets to the violent truths of the club\, her native Philippines\, and her own past. \nWinner of a Special Jury Award for Creative Vision from the Sundance Film Festival and the Philippines’ submission for consideration for the Best International Film Oscar. 2026\, Philippines/Singapore/U.K./France/The Netherlands\, DCP\, in Filipino\, English\, and Ilokano with English subtitles\, 100 minutes. SUMMARY:Tokyo Story at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Faith on Film\nTokyo Story\nDirected by Yasujiro Ozu \nSunday\, September 27\, 3 pm CINEMA +\nFree\, first come\, first served \n“[Tokyo Story] ennobles the cinema. It says\, yes\, a movie can help us make small steps against our imperfections.”—Roger Ebert\, Chicago Sun-Times \nA profoundly stirring evocation of elemental humanity and universal heartbreak\, Tokyo Story is the crowning achievement of the unparalleled Yasujiro Ozu. The film\, which follows an aging couple’s journey to visit their grown children in bustling postwar Tokyo\, surveys the rich and complex world of family life with the director’s customary delicacy and incisive perspective on social mores. Featuring lovely performances from Ozu regulars Chishu Ryu and Setsuko Hara\, Tokyo Story plumbs and deepens the director’s recurring theme of generational conflict\, creating what is without question one of cinema’s mightiest masterpieces. 1953\, Japan\, DCP\, in Japanese with English subtitles\, 137 minutes. Recommended for 12+. \nCINEMA + with a post-screening discussion with Sensei Jissai Prince-Cherry from the Louisville Zen Center.\nCo-presented with the Center for Interfaith Relations\, host of the nationally renowned Festival of Faiths and year-round programming that celebrates unique faith traditions that enrich our community. Join us for the 30th Festival of Faiths November 11-13 with the theme of Sacred Courage. Go to https://festivaloffaiths.org/ for tickets and more information!
