SUMMARY:Speed Together: Explore + Create
DESCRIPTION:Speed Together: Explore + Create  \nA monthly Sunday of art\, creativity\, and self-guided discovery\nSpeed Together is a free Sunday program that focuses on ART. This program offers the opportunity for families\, friends\, and first-time visitors to enjoy the galleries at their own pace\, take advantage of Docent supported learning\, or experiment with art materials in our open studios. Look for our welcome table near the front entrance to see what’s happening.  \nOpen Studio\, 2 – 4 pm in the Classroom\nA flexible\, drop-in studio experience designed for independent exploration and creative play. Open Studio offers a self-guided environment with accessible materials\, light prompts\, and space to experiment freely\, no instruction\, no pressure. Whether you’re inspired after exploring the museum\, continuing a project\, trying something new\, or simply looking for a quiet moment of making\, our classroom becomes your space to explore\, reflect\, and create at your own rhythm. All ages are welcome.  \nSpecial Programming:  \nThis lecture session is free and open to the public. \nChris Reitz\, Director of the Hite Institute of Art and Design at the University of Louisville\, returns for another round of his engaging lecture connected to the exhibition Abstract Expressionists: The Women (on view May 16–August 30). \nThis session will explore what “abstraction” means in art\, how modern artists and critics invented the concept\, and how historians are reconsidering it today. You’ll learn about the origins of modern abstract painting\, about its redeployment in postwar Abstract Expressionism\, and about the women who were central to both. Through guided discussion and close looking\, participants will develop their own understanding of abstraction\, one that is thoughtful\, flexible\, and open to different perspectives. Students\, artists\, and anyone curious about art are encouraged to attend. After the seminar\, participants are invited to visit the exhibition to continue the experience. \nChris Reitz is Director of the Hite Institute of Art and Design and Associate Professor of Critical and Curatorial Studies at the University of Louisville. He is the author of the book Martin Kippenberger: Everything is Everywhere. \n \nJoan Mitchell\nWhen They Were Gone\, 1977\nOil on canvas\, 94 x 71 in.\nCourtesy of the © Estate of Joan Mitchell and the American Federation of Arts (from the Levett Collection and FAMM).\nPhoto: Fraser Marr. \n

SUMMARY:The Passion of Joan of Arc at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Faith on Film\nThe Passion of Joan of Arc\nDirected by Carl Th. Dreyer \nSunday\, July 19\, 3 pm\, CINEMA+\nFree\, first come\, first served \n“One of the most inspired and inspiring films ever made.”—David Parkinson\, Empire Magazine \nSpiritual rapture and institutional hypocrisy are brought to stark\, vivid life in one of the most transcendent achievements of the silent era. Chronicling the trial of Joan of Arc in the final hours leading up to her execution\, Danish master Carl Theodor Dreyer depicts her torment with startling immediacy\, employing an array of techniques—including expressionistic lighting\, interconnected sets\, and painfully intimate close-ups— to immerse viewers in her subjective experience. Anchoring Dreyer’s audacious formal experimentation is a legendary performance by Renée Falconetti\, whose haunted face channels both the agony and the ecstasy of martyrdom. Thought to have been lost to fire\, the film’s original version was miraculously found in perfect condition in 1981 in a Norwegian mental institution\, heightening the mythic status of this widely revered masterwork. \nLong available only in rare prints that necessitated live accompaniment\, The Passion of Joan of Arc returns to screens in a new restoration\, partnered with Richard Einhorn’s acclaimed score Voices of Light for the first time theatrically. 1928\, France\, DCP\, 81 minutes. \nCINEMA+ with a post-screening discussion with Dr. Justin Klassen\, Professor of Theology & Religious Studies at Bellarmine University\, and Rev. Suzanne Barrow\, Director of Congregational Life at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church. \nCo-presented with the Center for Interfaith Relations\, host of the nationally renowned Festival of Faiths and year-round programming that celebrates unique faith traditions that enrich our community. Join us for the 30th Festival of Faiths November 11-13 with the theme of Sacred Courage. Go to https://festivaloffaiths.org/ for tickets and more information!

SUMMARY:Cornbread Mafia - 2026 Flyover Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:2026 Flyover Film Festival \n \nCornbread Mafia + Q&A\nDirected by Evan Mascagni and Drew Morris \nThursday\, July 23\, 6 pm CINEMA+ | SOLD OUT \n$15 | $10 Speed and LFS members \nThe largest marijuana syndicate in American history was not run out of Miami or New York\, it came from a bunch of farmers in Marion County\, Kentucky. DESCRIPTION:Will Poulter and Noah Centineo appear in Union County by Adam Meeks\, an official selection of the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.
