DESCRIPTION:Speed Together: Explore + Create  \nA monthly Sunday of art\, creativity\, and self-guided discovery\nSpeed Together is a free Sunday program that focuses on ART. This program offers the opportunity for families\, friends\, and first-time visitors to enjoy the galleries at their own pace\, take advantage of Docent supported learning\, or experiment with art materials in our open studios. Look for our welcome table near the front entrance to see what’s happening.  \nOpen Studio\, 2 – 4 pm in the Classroom\nA flexible\, drop-in studio experience designed for independent exploration and creative play. Open Studio offers a self-guided environment with accessible materials\, light prompts\, and space to experiment freely\, no instruction\, no pressure. Whether you’re inspired after exploring the museum\, continuing a project\, trying something new\, or simply looking for a quiet moment of making\, our classroom becomes your space to explore\, reflect\, and create at your own rhythm. All ages are welcome.  \nSpecial Programming:  \nThis lecture session is free and open to the public. \nChris Reitz\, Director of the Hite Institute of Art and Design at the University of Louisville\, returns for another round of his engaging lecture connected to the exhibition Abstract Expressionists: The Women (on view May 16–August 30). \nThis session will explore what “abstraction” means in art\, how modern artists and critics invented the concept\, and how historians are reconsidering it today. You’ll learn about the origins of modern abstract painting\, about its redeployment in postwar Abstract Expressionism\, and about the women who were central to both. Through guided discussion and close looking\, participants will develop their own understanding of abstraction\, one that is thoughtful\, flexible\, and open to different perspectives. Students\, artists\, and anyone curious about art are encouraged to attend. After the seminar\, participants are invited to visit the exhibition to continue the experience. \nChris Reitz is Director of the Hite Institute of Art and Design and Associate Professor of Critical and Curatorial Studies at the University of Louisville.
