SUMMARY:Fjord at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Fjord\nDirected by Cristian Mungiu \nSunday\, November 1\, 3 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members | Free for students with valid I.D. \n“Had me on the edge of my seat until the credits rolled.”—Radhika Seth\, Vogue \nMihai (Sebastian Stan)\, a digital technician\, and his wife Lisbet (Renate Reinsve) move from his country\, Romania\, to raise their five children in her remote hometown in Norway. Quickly\, however\, the family’s devotion to fundamentalist Christian beliefs leads them first into conflict\, and then into legal peril\, with liberal school authorities. \nThis achingly beautiful\, painfully relevant drama by Oscar-winning writer-director Cristian Mungiu (4 Months\, 3 Weeks\, and 2 Days) follows the couple’s increasing anguished confusion as they become enmeshed in accusations and punitive procedures they barely comprehend. As the stakes grow higher\, Mia\, their next-door neighbor\, reluctantly agrees to defend them in court. \nFjord\, awarded the Cannes Palme d’Or (the second win for Mungiu)\, provides a meticulous\, subtle\, and ironic study of how ideological extremes\, misconceptions\, and systematic contradictions can tear a community apart. Romania’s submission for consideration for the Best International Film Oscar. 2026\, Romania/France/Norway/Sweden/Denmark\, DCP\, in Norwegian\, Romanian\, and English with English subtitles\, 146 minutes. SUMMARY:La Bola Negra (Black Ball) at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:La Bola Negra (Black Ball)\nDirected by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo \nSaturday\, November 7\, 3 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members | Free for students with valid I.D. \nIn 2017\, Alberto\, a struggling playwright\, tries to piece together his grandfather’s story. In 1939\, Sebastián unenthusiastically joined the Fascist forces\, then fell in love with Rafael\, a POW fighting for the other side. \nThe writer-directors Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi\, legends of episodic TV in Spain\, connect the three characters through an unfinished Federico García Lorca play. They ingeniously weave together the fragments of story across time with astonishing clarity and wit\, syncopating the entangled themes of politics\, sexuality\, and theater. The directors take full advantage of the expanded canvas of the cinema turning a moment of Spain’s bloody history into a joyous celebration of the indestructible flame of romantic passion. The film is also complemented with engaging cameos by Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close. \nWinner of the Best Director prize at the Cannes Film Festival\, the Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival\, and the film is Spain’s submission for consideration for the Best International Film Oscar. 2026\, Spain/France\, DCP\, in Spanish with English subtitles\, 155 minutes. Rated R.

SUMMARY:Aanikoobijigan at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Aanikoobijigan [ancestor/great-grandparent/great-grandchild]Directed by Adam Khalil and Zack Khalil \nWednesday\, November 11\, 6 pm CINEMA + | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members | Free for college students with valid I.D. \n“At once a decry of the disregard the world has put on Native American bodies and a celebration of traditions that invite us to consider how we might commune with those who’ve long since passed.”—Zachary Lee\, RogerEbert.com \nAanikoobijigan examines the ongoing struggle to repatriate Indigenous ancestors' remains from museums and archives. Following Adam and Zack Khalil (Ojibway) alongside elders and MACPRA (Michigan Anishinaabek Cultural Preservation and Repatriation Alliance) members\, the film exposes the thin line between archaeology and grave robbery. \nThrough striking visuals and grounded Indigenous perspectives\, it challenges institutional resistance to decolonization and affirms that returning ancestors to the earth restores memory\, dignity\, and balance\, reminding us that no community can be whole until their ancestors are finally laid to rest. A selection of the Sundance Film Festival. 2026\, U.S./Denmark\, DCP\, 80 minutes. Recommended for 15+ \nCINEMA + with a post-screening discussion featuring Sirene Martin\, Speed Assistant Curator and NAGPRA Coordinator\, as well as Chester Whiteman and Fred Mosqueda\, representatives of the Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes who received 24 Indigenous repatriated objects from the Speed in August 2026 who will join by Zoom. \nImage credit: Courtesy of The Film Collaborative

SUMMARY:Once Upon a Time in Harlem at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Once Upon a Time in Harlem\nConceived by William Greaves and Directed by David Greaves \nFriday\, November 13\, 6 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members | Free for students with valid I.D. \n“It’s an invigorated portrait of radical changes as the byproduct of art\, politics\, and roiling intellectual debate.”—Nick Schager\, The Daily Beast \nA decade after his death\, genre-defying filmmaker William Greaves has one last trick up his sleeve with what he considered the most important event he captured on film: a 1972 party he engineered with the living luminaries of the Harlem Renaissance. For four hours\, this extraordinary group – many of whom had not seen each other in fifty years – reminisced\, critiqued\, argued\, laughed and drank while wrestling with their place in a rapidly shifting cultural landscape. \nShot on 16mm film\, newly restored and now directed by Greaves’ son David\, this landmark film is at once a self-exploration and an inquiry into the heart of the critical mass of energy called the Harlem Renaissance. William Greaves’ intent was not only to document these artists and intellectuals as they spoke about their lives and work but also to plumb the meaning of the extraordinary creative period in which they lived to help us better understand how culture has been passed on from one generation to another and the role that the artist plays in keeping it alive. 2026\, U.S.\, DCP\, 100 minutes. SUMMARY:Once Upon a Time in Harlem at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Once Upon a Time in Harlem\nConceived by William Greaves and Directed by David Greaves \nSaturday\, November 14\, 6 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members | Free for students with valid I.D. SUMMARY:The Last Waltz at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Music + Film \nThe Last WaltzDirected by Martin Scorsese \nThursday\, November 19\, 7 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed and LPM members | Free for college students with valid I.D. \nMore than just one of the greatest concert films ever made\, The Last Waltz is an at once ecstatic and elegiac summation of a vital era in American rock music. Invited to capture the farewell performance of the legendary group the Band at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom on Thanksgiving\, 1976\, Martin Scorsese conceived a new kind of music documentary. \nEnlisting seven camera operators (led by director of photography Michael Chapman\, and also including renowned cinematographers Vilmos Zsigmond and László Kovács) and production designer Boris Leven to design the strikingly theatrical sets\, Scorsese created a grandly immersive experience that brings viewers onstage and inside the music itself. That music—as performed by the Band and a host of other generation-defining artists\, including Bob Dylan\, Joni Mitchell\, Van Morrison\, the Staple Singers\, Muddy Waters\, and Neil Young—lives on as an almost religious expression of the transcendent possibilities of rock and roll. 1978\, U.S.\, 4K DCP\, 117 minutes. \nCo-presented with WFPK\, who will be playing selections from The Last Waltz soundtrack throughout the day on Thanksgiving.

SUMMARY:The Great Dictator at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Essential Cinema \nThe Great DictatorDirected by Charles Chaplin \nSaturday\, November 28\, 3 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members | Free for college students with valid I.D. \nIn his controversial masterpiece The Great Dictator\, Charlie Chaplin offers both a cutting caricature of Adolf Hitler and a sly tweaking of his own comic persona. Chaplin\, in his first pure talkie\, brings his sublime physicality to two roles: the cruel yet clownish “Tomainian” dictator and the kindly Jewish barber who is mistaken for him. \nFeaturing Jack Oakie and Paulette Goddard in stellar supporting turns\, The Great Dictator\, boldly going after the fascist leader before the U.S.’s official entry into World War II\, is an audacious amalgam of politics and slapstick that culminates in Chaplin’s famously impassioned speech. 1940\, U.S.\, DCP\, 125 minutes.

SUMMARY:Ink at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Ink\nDirected by Danny Boyle \nFriday\, December 11\, 6 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members | Free for students with valid I.D. \n“Visually stimulating and highly enjoyable.”—David Rooney\, The Hollywood Reporter \nIn the late 1960s\, the millionaire Rupert Murdoch (Guy Pearce) and veteran newspaper editor Larry Lamb (Jack O’Connell) team up to hatch a wild plan: to challenge London’s leading newspaper with a brash new form of journalism. They hope to win comeuppance against the snobbish British aristocratic elite. \nAs Lamb reinvents Murdoch’s tabloid The Sun\, he becomes an attack dog\, devolving his newspaper into a sensationalistic\, sexually charged\, and right-leaning rag—and watches sales skyrocket. \nAcademy Award-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire\, 127 Hours) works from James Graham’s adaptation of his own hit play\, taking darkly exuberant comic delight in a wild underdog story with radically destructive results. Claire Foy plays the woman’s page editor Jules Davies\, and the trio’s superb performances\, along with Boyle’s inventive visual pastiche\, make Ink mesmerizing and gripping entertainment. 2026\, U.K./U.S./France\, DCP\, 116 minutes. Rated R.
