SUMMARY:Once Upon a Time in Harlem at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Once Upon a Time in Harlem\nConceived by William Greaves and Directed by David Greaves \nSaturday\, November 14\, 12 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members | Free for students with valid I.D. \n“It’s an invigorated portrait of radical changes as the byproduct of art\, politics\, and roiling intellectual debate.”—Nick Schager\, The Daily Beast \nA decade after his death\, genre-defying filmmaker William Greaves has one last trick up his sleeve with what he considered the most important event he captured on film: a 1972 party he engineered with the living luminaries of the Harlem Renaissance. For four hours\, this extraordinary group – many of whom had not seen each other in fifty years – reminisced\, critiqued\, argued\, laughed and drank while wrestling with their place in a rapidly shifting cultural landscape. \nShot on 16mm film\, newly restored and now directed by Greaves’ son David\, this landmark film is at once a self-exploration and an inquiry into the heart of the critical mass of energy called the Harlem Renaissance. William Greaves’ intent was not only to document these artists and intellectuals as they spoke about their lives and work but also to plumb the meaning of the extraordinary creative period in which they lived to help us better understand how culture has been passed on from one generation to another and the role that the artist plays in keeping it alive. 2026\, U.S.\, DCP\, 100 minutes. SUMMARY:La Bola Negra (Black Ball) at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:La Bola Negra (Black Ball)\nDirected by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo \nSaturday\, November 14\, 2 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members | Free for students with valid I.D. \nIn 2017\, Alberto\, a struggling playwright\, tries to piece together his grandfather’s story. In 1939\, Sebastián unenthusiastically joined the Fascist forces\, then fell in love with Rafael\, a POW fighting for the other side. \nThe writer-directors Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi\, legends of episodic TV in Spain\, connect the three characters through an unfinished Federico García Lorca play. They ingeniously weave together the fragments of story across time with astonishing clarity and wit\, syncopating the entangled themes of politics\, sexuality\, and theater. The directors take full advantage of the expanded canvas of the cinema turning a moment of Spain’s bloody history into a joyous celebration of the indestructible flame of romantic passion. The film is also complemented with engaging cameos by Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close. \nWinner of the Best Director prize at the Cannes Film Festival\, the Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival\, and the film is Spain’s submission for consideration for the Best International Film Oscar. 2026\, Spain/France\, DCP\, in Spanish with English subtitles\, 155 minutes. Rated R.
