The Heiresses (Las Herederas)
Directed by Marcelo Martinessi
“A finely-crafted, beautifully realized debut that exquisitely balances character study with shrewd commentary on class, desire and the lingering privileges of Paraguay’s elite.” —Jay Weissberg, Variety
Chela and Chiquita, both descended from wealthy families in Asunción, Paraguay, have been together for over 30 years. But recently their financial situation deteriorated and they began selling off their inherited possessions. When their debts lead to Chiquita’s imprisonment on fraud charges, Chela is forced to face a new reality. Driving for the first time in years, she begins to run a taxi service for a group of wealthy elderly ladies.
As Chela settles into her new life, she encounters the much younger Angy, forging a fresh and invigorating new connection. Chela finally begins to break out of her shell and engage with the world, embarking on her own personal, intimate revolution.
Ana Brun won the Best Actress Award from the Berlin Film Festival for her portrayal of Chela. 2017, Paraguay, DCP, in Spanish with English subtitles, 97 minutes. Recommended for 16+.
