Raise Hell: The Life and Times of Molly Ivins
Directed by Janice Engel

“Smart and entertaining, just like its subject.”—Caryn James, The Hollywood Reporter

Raise Hell: The Life and Times of Molly Ivins tells the story of political columnist Molly Ivins, six feet of Texas trouble who took on the Good Old Boy corruption wherever she found it. Her razor-sharp wit left both sides of the aisle laughing and craving ink in her columns. She knew the Bill of Rights was in peril and said, “Polarizing people is a good way to win an election and a good way to wreck a country.” Ivins’ words have proved prescient.

Ivins gained fame for her sharp political commentary as a newspaper columnist, author, and humorist. Starting with the Minneapolis Tribune as the first female police reporter, she moved to the Texas Observer and to the New York Times; ultimately earning a syndicated column carried by hundreds of newspapers including Louisville’s LEO Weekly.

This insightful and rollicking documentary captures the wild and oftentimes difficult life of Ivins as she struggled with alcohol dependency and valiantly fought breast cancer. She was a defender of truth who inspired her readers to fight ignorance and corruption. Now it’s up to us to raise hell! A selection of the Sundance Film Festival. 2019, U.S., DCP, 93 minutes.  Recommended for 13+.
