Public Lecture with Supernatural America curator Robert Cozzolino

December 2 at 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Join us for a public lecture from Robert Cozzolino, curator of Supernatural America: The Paranormal in American Art.

“Unseen Beings: Spirit Artists and their Collaborators.”
Several artists featured in Supernatural America were mediums, practitioners of the sacred in the Spiritualist religion. They made paintings and drawings in trance states by allowing spirits to enter their bodies and control their hands. Robert Cozzolino, curator of the exhibition, will discuss the connection between art and mediumship, focusing on Spirit artists included in the exhibition. How did they talk about their practice? Who were these spirits guiding their hands? Did well-known artists have any connection to mediumship? How might their interests change how we see art history?

Tickets are free for members, $10 for nonmembers. Capacity is limited and registration is encouraged.

About the Speaker

Robert Cozzolino is the current Patrick and Aimee Butler Curator of Paintings at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. He has been called the “curator of the dispossessed” for championing underrepresented artists and uncommon perspectives on well-known artists. He has collaborated with many contemporary artists, and in 2014 organized the largest American museum exhibition of David Lynch’s visual art.

A native of Chicago, he studied at the University of Illinois at Chicago before receiving his MA and PhD (2006) from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. In his work on American art he has emphasized regional diversity, integrating artists of Illinois, Wisconsin, California, and other areas into installations, thematic exhibitions, and his scholarship. Before joining Mia he was the senior curator and Evelyn and Will Kaplan Curator of Modern Art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) in Philadelphia, where he oversaw more than 30 exhibitions, including retrospectives of George Tooker, Peter Blume, and Elizabeth Osborne. He acquired more than 2,000 objects for PAFA, mostly gifts, including the Linda Lee Alter Collection of Art by Women and major collections of work by Sue Coe, Ellen Lanyon, and Miriam Schapiro.

Note: Proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test from within the past 72 hours will be required for all guests 12+ attending this event.
