“A journey of redemption and artistic self-discovery.”—M.J. O’Toole, Hammer to Nail

Art & Krimes by Krimes is a documentary about creativity spurred by confinement and loss. While locked up for six years in federal prison, artist Jesse Krimes secretly creates monumental works of art—including an astonishing 40-foot mural made with prison bed sheets, hair gel, and newspaper. He smuggles out each panel piece-by-piece with the help of fellow artists, only seeing the mural in totality upon coming home. As Krimes’ work captures the art world’s attention, he struggles to adjust to life outside, living with the threat that any misstep will trigger a life sentence.

Krimes also co-founded Right of Return USA, the first national fellowship dedicated to supporting formerly incarcerated artists, along with artist Russell Craig who is also featured in the documentary.

The film includes animation created by acclaimed animator Molly Schwartz in collaboration with Jesse Krimes. The original score is by composer Amanda Jones in collaboration with formerly incarcerated musicians who are alumni of Musicambia.  2021, U.S., DCP, 85 minutes. Recommended for 13+.

Cinema +  Artist Jesse Krimes will participate in an in-person post-screening Q&A followed by a workshop inspired by his work. Pre-register if you plan on participating. The workshop begins at 2:45 pm and runs till 4:45 pm.
