A Presidential Portrait
Lexington artist Matthew Jouett probably never met Thomas Jefferson. Instead, he copied a painting he saw in renowned artist Gilbert Stuart’s Boston studio in 1816. Jefferson originally posed for Stuart  in 1800, but the artist retained the portrait for twenty-one years so that he could paint multiple copies to sell to collectors. Jouett learned Stuart’s lesson well. He painted at least four versions of his own Jefferson portrait, including one that hangs in the White House.
