Sacred Destination
Cairo, known as “the city of a thousand minarets,” inspired Anderson to make on-site sketches during his 1874 visit to Egypt. Once he returned to his New York studio, he produced paintings based on his drawings. The Mosque is likely a composite of several different architectural elements, inspired primarily by the mosques and mausoleums of Emir Qurqumas and Sultan al-Ashraf Qaytbay.
