Who was J. H.?
The initials on this table probably were those of its first owner. So was J. H. male or female? Clues suggest female. The table’s beautiful inlay appears on all four sides, meaning that it was meant to be used in the middle of a room rather than against a wall. Women’s sewing tables, similar in size to this table, were designed and used in this way. Further, marks under the top show where pin cushions were clamped.
