Familiar Samplers
This sampler’s flowers, insects, animals, and architectural elements drew on an ornamental vocabulary familiar to many early nineteenth-century American needle workers. The grand house, found on other samplers from Kentucky and elsewhere, incorporates the precise symmetry typical of the period’s classically inspired architecture. The sampler descended in the family of its maker, Ann Nelson.
