Both of these amazing small-scale alabaster sculptures suffer the same fate, including abrasion and scratches, accretions, dust and grime, flaking and coating loss, wear, breaks, cracks, dents, gouges, loose parts, previous repair, and what’s known in the conservation business as “spalling and sugaring of the surface”. To proceed with treatment, the sculptures will be cleaned, and the conservator will reduce discolored overpaint around the old break lines.

Following cleaning, the old fills on the back of the sculpture will be removed, along with the non-original metal bases and epoxy used to adhere them. This would allow the sculptures to be displayed as they were originally intended.
