The Veiled Lady, 1890
Adolfo Apolloni (Italian, 1855–1923)
Marble and copper
Gift of Miss A. M. Hegeman 1940.9.1

The Speed’s veiled lady suffers from a moderate to heavy layer of gray surface grime, which has collected and embedded itself into the crevices of this carefully carved sculpture. Yellow spots are scattered throughout, further disfiguring the surface of the marble. The bronze base has casting material still stuck in its crevices.

Cleaning tests suggest that the results of a full treatment would be dramatic—the overall appearance would be significantly improved, and the object would be able to be presented in the galleries. In its current state, it is unexhibitable.

Both marble and bronze base will be thoroughly cleaned and restored and the metal will be waxed, in order to further preserve the patination.
