Albert Bierstadt (American, 1830-1902)
Oil on paper, mounted on cardboard, mounted on canvas

This small painting has quite a view! It’s an oil sketch that was probably completed outside and onsite by Bierstadt. Like most oil studies, there is no varnish present on the surface of the painting. Unfortunately, a significant grime and dirt layer has built up over the decades, coating the surface. As a result, the overall design is generally obscured by grime and poor color saturation. We’ll remove the dirt, careful to preserve the original paint layer. After that, we’ll determine whether a stable varnish needs to be applied, or if it can be left alone.
The painting is unexhibitable in its current condition and frame; a new period-appropriate frame will make this work ready for the galleries!
