Voices of the Rainforest, originally a 1991 Rykodisc CD, was a documentary sound art composition of a day in the life of the Bosavi rainforest in Papua, New Guinea and its inhabitants. In 2016, for the CD’s 25th anniversary, the original analog tape recordings were digitized, and the 60-minute piece was recomposed in 7.1 cinema surround sound, in collaboration with Skywalker Sound editor Dennis Leonard, Secret Life of Pets and Castaway. With the support of producer Mickey Hart and the School for Advanced Research, 2017 and 2018 were devoted to building a film around the soundtrack, drawing both from Steven Feld’s 1976-1999 photographs, and a return to Bosavi with filmmaker Jeremiah Ra Richards. The result is an immersive eco-rockumentary, a cinematic concert for ears. Feld is an ethnomusicologist, writer, musician, music producer, and filmmaker who will introduce the screening and lead a post-screening Q&A. 2019, U.S./New Guinea, DCP, 68 minutes. Recommended for 12+.
Co-presented by SONICBernheim in conjunction with Feld’s program at the Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest on Sunday, October 13.
